In the first 6 months of 2006, Japanese hardware sales show that Nintendo has sold 2.5 million DS handhelds consoles, 1.6 million of them being the new DS Lite. That’s compared to 770,000 PSPs sold during the same time.

As that article points out, the strong sales of Nintendo DS is largely due to the fact that it appeals to the older generation as well (with the “brain training” games and all that). It’s only a matter of time before Sony comes out with their own line of puzzle and brain teaser games for the PSP.
