On this day fifteen years ago, Sonic the Hedgehog was born. We only knew him as the first video game character with “attitude”. Now we know him as a video game icon, Sega’s mascot, and Mario’s nemesis friend.

The entire Sonic franchise has sold 44 million copies, beating out Tomb Raider, Resident Evil, and nearly Tetris. Sega no longer creates consoles, but that doesn’t mean they discontinued making games.

Sonic already has many games lined up for the next-generation, including Sonic the Hedgehog for the 360 & PS3, and Sonic Wildfire for Wii. More recently, he has starred in Sonic Riders, and soon, Sonic the Hedgehog on the Gameboy Advance with a save feature.

Although Sonic’s father, Yuji Naka, is no longer with Sega, he will always have ties to his son, Sonic. Sega Does What Nintendon’t.
