In an interview with GammaSutra, Sony’s John Hight, director of external production at SCEA Santa Monica, said that Sony’s digital distribution program will be beneficial for both publishers and developers alike.
“Certainly being able to sell globally on-line makes it easier to reach international and remote markets. On the business side, it also lowers our cost of sales and eliminates inventory risk. It should help curtail used game sales and piracy.”
He also confirmed that Sony is working on games that will be delivered via the new digital distribution system, and according to Hight, they are so unique that they couldn’t run on an Xbox360.
“We’re looking for fresh, new ideas that fully exploit the power of PlayStation 3. Our first party projects are all unique to PS3. Some of our games, by virtue of their design and hardware demands, simply couldn’t work on Xbox 360.”
The E-Distribution system is also intended for independent developers, if you have a great idea or concept, Sony offers you to register at the Sony Developers Website.
