Cartoon Network announced they have teamed up with Korean developer Grigon Entertainment to create an MMO featuring their known cartoon characters. According to 1UP, the companies are developing the game in hope of reaching an untapped market of children that are interested in MMO, but are too young for World of Warcraft.
Cartoon Network VP and General Manager Jim Samples says:
“This MMOG is a key part of Cartoon Network’s growth strategy, and is an important complement to our mobile, broadband and our existing online business. With the MMOG, mobile content, our Web sites and, of course, our linear network, Cartoon Network is always on for kids”
Unlike other MMOs, Cartoon Network doesn’t plan on charging kids to play, the game will be a free download, however, a subscription will be required for additional content.

1That’s cool but so far off for kids. This one from Corus Entertainment (YTV in Canada) is launching soon as it says in their news release ‘later this year’:
September 28, 2006
(Toronto, Canada) – Corus Entertainment Inc. announced today plans to develop a network of massive multiplayer online games (MMOGs) in partnership with Quebec-based Frima Studio Inc. Unparalleled in the marketplace, this immersive online game initiative for kids, code-named Constellation, is set to launch later this year.
