Valve’s Portal Not So Original?

Narbacular Drop

I was pleasantly surprised with Valve’s portal announcement and trailer a few days ago. It turns out that the “portal” gameplay concept was actually from a game called Narbacular Drop, a game that won the IGF Student Showcase award. Apparently, Valve saw the game and contacted the indie developers, offering a few of them the contract to make the game using the Source engine.

You can download freeware game here (27 MB).

Nothing’s ever truely original, just 2 ideas that haven’t been paired together before.

The reason the original game was created was to get noticed and get a job no?
