DS Sales Reach 20 Million

Nintendo has announced that the total sales of their handheld console, Nintendo DS (and DS Lite) have surpassed the 20 million mark. They estimate that 21.270.000 have been sold since it was introduced in November 2004.

Nintendo sold 4,5 million DS consoles in the first quarter of 2006, that’s tripled compared to Q1 2005. The expect the new DS Lite to sell 17 million between April 2006 and March 2007. That would bring the total amount of consoles sold to almost 40 million in the first 2.5 half years.

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata said that they deliver anywhere from 100.000 to 150.000 units every Sunday to retailers, and they sell out on the same day. Currently, 2 million DS Lite consoles are being produced every month to meet the high demand.
