haloUniversal Studios and Microsoft have named the director responsible for bringing Halo to the big screen. Short film and commercial director Neill Blomkamp will direct the movie, produced by none other than Peter Jackson (Lord of The Rings).

I’ve never heard of Blomkamp, apparently he directed some interesting short films, namely “Alive in Joburg”, which won him three Clio Awards, and an Emmy nomination.

The movie will be shot in Wellington, New Zealand, using Jackson’s production facilities, including the Weta Workshop guys who did Lord of The Rings. Peter Jackson says:

“As a gaming fan, I’m excited to bring Halo’s premise, action and settings to the screen with all the specificity and reality today’s technology can provide Fran (co-Producer) and I are intrigued by the unique challenges this project offers, and we’re delighted to be working again with our friends at Universal, and with our new ones at Fox and Microsoft. With Neill on board, I’m even more excited by the potential of this project.”

Expect the movie to hit the theaters worldwide in the summer of 2008.
