Third Party Wii Games Offline In 2006

August 25th, 2006 by Tobias Dahl in Business, MMO, Multiplayer, Online, Software, Wii

marioThere will be no online modes in any third party Wii game this year, according to IGN. While previewing Tony Hawk’s Downhill Jam, they found out that the game won’t support an online mode, neither will any other third part Wii game. First in 2007, developers will be able to use the WiFi feature in their games.

Neither Activision nor Nintendo would comment on the story, apparently Nintendo hasn’t made the WiFi Connection library open to developers yet. This means that no third party launch title, or title released in 2006, will sport an online multiplayer mode.

What causes Nintendo to do this? Considering the popularity of online console gaming at the moment, this is probably the worst Nintendo could do. Unless they have some grand plan for ‘06, where only Nintendo games are online.
