PS3 Load Times Will Be Slow (Very Slow)

In a recent post, Microsoft blogger Ozymandias continues his rant against Sony, PS3, and the Blu-ray drive. This time though, he’s got a good point when he mentions that load times are faster on a 360, since Sony is using a 2x speed BD drive, working at 9 MB/second. The Xbox360 uses a 12x DVD drive, where transfer speeds are at 16 MB/second. Even the PS3 DVD reader is faster than the Blu-ray.
Now imagine Resistance: Fall of Man, taking up a massive 22 GB, what sort of loading times can we expect? If there’s one thing Sony hasn’t openly talked about regarding the PS3, it’s the loading times.

You seem to be forgetting that the PS3 has a hard drive standard. So devs will be able to cache. We saw how effective this was during E3 with the GTHD presentation when there were next to no loading times. The 360 on the other hand does not have the hard drive standard on all consoles, thus cacheing is not a universal option.

Good point Matthew, but you still have to load stuff over to the hard drive. 22 GB at 9MB/second would take hours and hours.
And eventually you WILL need the entire 22 GB in order to play the game, so hours of your time will be lost on loading.

the first xbox loaded all the games before to decrease loading times so maybe the ps3 will do that

Even with all Sony’s “mistakes” with the PS3, I highly doubt the loading times will be too much of an issue. I’ll be surprised if it will take very much longer than PS2.
Having said that, I have no idea how they will pull it off since 9 MB per second does sound awfully slow.

The PS3 HD would be eaten alive trying to cache the storage capacity of a couple of BDs… caching will help, but only a very little.
What the PS3 needs is an on screen border, with flickery lines… this used to make me feel better in the old 8 bit days, while waiting for a game to load.

for one they couldn’t have run the GT on the REAL hardware, since it wasn’t available at the time. it would have been the dev-kit or something, and guess what? it would have been running off the hard-drive, precached. they’re not going to load it in front of an audience, having them wait, they’d set it up so it’s pretty much instant for the sake of the presentation.

for example this 6 minute video of WWE SMvs.Raw taking 5 minutes to load a match is full of crap i have both versions of the game in PS2 and PSP and the PSP loads alot faster thats a fact.

It’s getting harder to keep up with the FUD, but I shall say this, the 360 will not load faster than the PS3. The rate at which the 360 reads DVD’s is variable, meaning that on occasions it IS faster but Blu-Ray also has the advantage of using the standard HHD within the PS3 for caching.
Devs may also use a technique called, level block parapointers which may in some cases aid both the 360’s and PS3’s load times. Overall, they’ll both load games at roughly the same pace.
Just wait and you shall see, when the Playstation 3 is released all will be revealed.

It’s very obvious that only a certain part of the HDD is going to be used for caching and temporarily at that. Common logic here folks. Sony aren’t going to allow the whole HDD to be used for caching, rendering the HDD itself totally useless.

Microsoft blogger Ozymandias is posting a distorted truth.
People see 12x and assume that the 360 reads discs at that speed constantly, which is false. The 12x is a peak speed which is gained on the outermost edge of the disc (about 15% area) because it is a Constant Angular Velocity drive. The inner most area of the disc is where the drive effectively drops to 5x. Secondly, the drive reads dual layer dics even slower, a peak speed of 8x at the extreme edge, and a speed of 3.3x for the inner ring.
5x to 12x (6.25 to 15 MB/s) Single Layer
3.3x to 8x (4.125 to 10 MB/s) Dual Layer
The 2X Blu-ray drive (Constant Linear Velocity – 9MB/s, single or dual layer, anywhere on the disc) is faster than the 360 when the 360 is using a dual layer disc. Most games are dual layer.
-360 is faster with single layer discs (DVD5)
-PS3 (BD25) is faster compared to a Dual Layer (DVD9) on the 360

now its up to the game devs to see how they work the load times for games , there MC3 which in PSP loads real slow then theres daxter which loads lighting fast.

I’ve recently bought a PS2-Slim. It’s also the first console i’ve ever bought.
I’ve always liked Playstation ever since my friend invited me over to join him 1 on 1.
When the XBox came out, i wasn’t too excited. But there will always be those that like one system over another.
Another factor in my liking of the Playstation is quality. Japanese systems are known for quality, dependability and overall fun.
I hope they keep true to there word in the long run.

Oh yeah, because the XBox controller is $50, $10 more is SO MUCH MONEY. If Nintendo does teh thing they did in Japan, where a Nunchuck+Wiimote is $50, then that’d be great.
But of course, the technology IS expensive. A primitive motion sensing mounse at newegg is $80, and that’s the CHEAP one. We’re getting a deal with the Wii.
THat’s more than can be said with the PS3.

Microsoft isn’t any more Evil than another company. They just happen to be good at what they do.
Also, a $200 return a a console is amazing. Almost all companies lose money when they sell consoles, and the Wii is just lslightly cheaper than the GameCube to make, so they really just make amounts of $10-$20.

1. It can play DVDs, but in order to keep the price down Nintendo’s seperated the cost of royalties into the Remote that you can buy for whtathe royalties would have cost, $30 USD.

Hmm…. How do I put this- The Wii was starting to be made as soon as the GameCube came out. Oops. Guess that predates the EyeToy.
Plus the PS3’s sensing is more advanced than the EyeToy- THe PS3 uses motion SENSING, the EyeToy uses motion CAPTURE.

When there is a discussion like abut who came up with the ideas first, no matter how you put it, Nintendo is the most original company. For starters, the invented the modern console. Sonys PSOne is a complete rip off of the nes and Supernes. Nobody can argue with that.
The PSOne controller has almost the exact same buttons as the supernes joypad, although it came 4 years later. This to is a total rip off.
The PS2 controller has two d-pads and rumble, which nintendo invented on the N-64 joypad, even though it came 4 years later. Again, a total rip off from nintendo.
Nintendo was the first to announce motion controll on their console. Then suddenly sony has dropped their boomerang joypad and their well liked build in rumble, and now has a motion sensoring joypad. Nobody can really prove that they stole Nintendo’s idea. But not even the game developes had even heard about the motion censor until 3 weeks before E3. Nobody can prove that was a rip off too, but it surely stinks.

It’s not the same idea. How is it the same idea? With eyetoy your image is on the screen and you grab non-excistent objects in the air. With the wiimote you control imagenary things with the wiimote in your hand, fx a gun, a driving wheel or a sword. How is that the same thing Shaka? How is the eyetoy and the wiimote the same thing?

Sony did make history with just 2 consoles people can hate on it all they want half of the fans of the Xbox started at Sony which most of their Fans came from Nintendo.or Sega Sony did bite Nintendo’ style with the ps1 but you people forget to realize that Sony made it more Grown up ,while Nintendo was like no we want fun games for kids (still alot of money to make) . this is why the ps1 or ps2 blew up , Sony listen to gamers about what type of contoller style and gameplay they would like to see . people grew up its just that mario was cool as a kid but when you grow up lol you want blood and harcore games . thats why they did so well they targeted teens . now you see that Nintendo started makin more harcore games when they saw the money sony was maken. Seriously. Why do people think nintendo is an underdog in the console wars? Each of these companies has terrible monopolistic strategies. Microsoft doesn’t really need to be explained. Nintendo hypes every system and when it had a near monopoly with the original nintendo it abused it’s power against game developers.
Sony hypes possibly more than nintendo and the lies they spew about the competition is unreal. Remember the dreamcast people? Apparantly the playstation 2 was going to be over 10 times as strong as the cheaper dreamcast. Remember what happened with the ‘emotion engine’? The playstation 2 has a 294 mhz processor while the dreamcast has a 200 mhz processor. Now that is awfully close isn’t it? Let’s not forget the dreamcast had 480p capability(playstation 2 lacked this) and the dreamcast was cheaper and came over a year earlier. Look at some dreamcast games and you’ll see that they are pretty close in quality to the ps2 if not nearly identical.
Overall I must say that you must only really believe in the quality of a product after trying it out after a good 6-7 months after it comes out when companies are starting to produce good stuff. The only system that is proven right now is the xbox 360. In a year we’ll see which system is the true victor in this console war.
