Duke Nukem Forever Almost Finished?

September 7th, 2006 Posted in Action, Adventure, PC, Rumor

Recently rumors flew around saying that key members of the Duke Nukem Forever team left, indicating of yet more delays (big surprise). President of 3D Realms, George Broussard, went on the forums and denied any problems, saying it was a common thing among companies.

“There’s honestly nothing to be concerned about. People leave. People come. There’s staff on the project you don’t know about. You know some, you don’t know most. There’s truly nothing to worry about.

He further went and spoke about the development, and surprisingly, the game is “almost” done, and currently in “polish” stage.

“Physics and animation systems are virtually finished and shippable. It’s simply maintenance and polish from here on out. We haven’t needed to make substantial changes to those systems in months. The changes we have made were made without great effort.”

After 10 years in development, I have no idea what his definition of “polish” is. I recall it was in “polish” 4 years ago.

How can they afford to develop a game for 10! years?!?!?

  3. Zac Says:

i wonder if it’ll be any good.

let’s hope the 10 years was worth it…

Even if DNF is everything that GB says it will/might be, after this much code-thrashing, it will be buggy. If they wrote it from scratch everytime they restarted, it will still likely suck.

If John Carmack (who was actively shipping games during the dev cycle of DNF) could scarcely make Doom 3 a hit in the eyes of gamers, how can a largely-out-of-the-game bureaucrat like George Broussard hope to deliver something that is, at least current, and at best, a decent game (by current gaming standards?)

Let’s forever make the acronym for Duke Nukem Forever be remembered as “Did Not Finish”. (Sorry George…I believed in y’all for a lot of years, but even my naivety ran dry waiting.)

3D Realms is fat with cash, which is why they can take this long to release a game. Fat and happy is not a good state within which to be writing the next great PC/Xbox/etc game.

Your Mileage (and Opinions) May Vary…
