EA has chosen (wisely enough) to expand the Battlefield 2142 beta program by allowing additional 10,000 users to try it out. Of course, as last time, you’ll have to be a FilePlanet subscriber. A new beta version will also be released, including over 1,000 changes in the game, based on the feedback from the already 65,000 people testing it.

You may wonder why the game isn’t a public and free beta to begin with. One answer, perhaps the most obvious, is that EA has some sort of partnership with FilePlanet. The other, more interesting one could be that they don’t what too many people to actually “play” the game. They might not understand what a “beta” is and judge the game in its current state, rather than to wait for the retail version.

A sort of reversed version of Battlefield 2, where the demo was fun and worked perfectly, yet the retail version was almost, well, a beta relase. Somehow I still feel it is.
