eve onlineCCP Games, makers of EVE Online announced during the Austin Games Conference that they are now running EVE Online using the largest computer cluster in gaming history. The new server cluster is made by IBM, and features dual AMD Opterons and solid state hard drives. CEO of CCP Games Hilmar Veigar Pétursson says,

“Our goal was to implement a scalable solution that could accommodate the influx of new subscribers and gracefully manage the steadily increasing demand put on our infrastructure. IBM provided us with optimized hardware that improved overall game performance and increased capacity, especially during peak server usage timeframes.”

The new system will be able to handle 150 million database transactions every day. CCP hopes that a single shard (Wikipedia definition) of the cluster will host at least 50,000 players at the same time, current record is 30,000.
