PS3 To Use Xfire For Online Service

Sony’s answer to Xbox Live has been revealed; it’s Xfire, the popular chat and games client used by many PC gamers. Sony will have their own version of Xfire running on the PlayStation Network Platform (PNP).
The news came during the Viacom (who bought Xfire back in April) 2006 Earnings Conference Call, a transcript from the event can be found here,
Xfire just signed a deal with Sony to create a version of their platform for the new PS3, which will now enable Xfire to extend its reach further into the huge console gaming market.
I don’t know if this is the first “good” PS3 news for a long time. In a way, one would expect Sony to have something original with the PS3 online service, not a piece of licensed software (although Xfire is pretty good).

I am disappointed that Sony couldn’t some up with something original that could really take advantage of the PS3 and its online capabilities.
Xfire is made for PCs, and by signing a deal a few months before the PS3 launch, there’s not gonna be much time for Sony to correctly implement the service for the PS3. It’s essentially a “port” of PC software to the PS3.
That doesn’t mean it wouldn’t challenge Xbox Live, most of PS3 online stuff will be free, which is a big plus regardless of the software it runs on.

Bill: Sony has been testing out different types of software for a while now, Xfire was one of them. There was no “deal” until now.

i’m a big sony person, i have sony tv’s, a psp, ps2, digital camera, camcorder etc… but honestly, i think they are making some huge mistakes with the ps3. they are so arrogant about it, that they will no doubt overlook something that is going to turn out really bad for them. almost reminds of the tortoise and the hare story.
i also think it is a cop out on sony’s part to steal the 360’s acheivements idea, and to start incorporating 3rd party software for their online service…?!?! obviously they don’t have the capacity to come up with their own unique ideas to differ from other console systems.
plus i think they are making a huge gamble by forcing consumers to buy the ps3 w/ blu-ray. should this technology fail (as they have with every other format they’ve tried) you are going to be really disappointed you paid top dollar for a technology that hasn’t even proven itself yet.

This is kinda my point people on the internet treath Sony like if it was hitler. i never been about brand. its kinda obiovius as a man who has open mind quickly can cach all this hating to Sony on the popular blogs.
Sony announces something good like this and then the bloggers find a way to make it seem bad. this is why i kinda go with Sony on this new generation its the real underdog here.
i mean i dont see anybody saying nothing bad about nintendo beacuase it will not play online games on the wii until next year.

Yeah, Kaiser, I kinda squinted my eyebrows at the UMD thing too. But if it’s true about how Sony let the movie companies determine the packaging/price/features etc for the UMDs, then I’d say that was a bad move on Sony’s part- giving up to much control to the movie companies. However, if they’re palnning on shipping much less expensive UMDs with features comparable to their DVD counter parts, perhaps there may be a chance that the UMD might-just might- receive some sort of clemency.
My thing is that i can’t wait to see how the PSP and the PS3 work together. The idea of the PSP working as remote control with and extra screen for the PS3 sounds cool (Nintendogs can’t say Sony stole that idea). And with 200 new PSP titles coming out by this Christmas.. All those games? You can’t tell me that they’re ALL going to suck. Just start saving your money if you haven’t already begun to. Because I predict that the PSP and the PS3 is going to be a serious tag team come this November! A what??? A monstrous tag team! Now wipe the sweat off of your fore head, Nintendo fanboy!

Prehaps that’s because- Oh yes, Nintendo said that the Wii is about bringing non-gamers into the gaming market. So in order to do this, they’re going to have to include things(Like Wii channels) that bring non-gamers in.

I agree, as I never have liked the “Two different versions, one core and one deluxe” model. However, it’s not that bad- You can upgrade at a later time if oyu don’t have the money right away.

Ofcourse they ask money for plastic, everybody does that nowadays.
God I love the old free-plastics days.
But the add-ons ps1 and ps2 (and p3) have aren’t neccesary for the other 99,9% of games available. It’s just a gimmick, it’s a choice, like the free internet thing. Unlike other examples in my head. Like the silly rumble addon on N64, remote for dvd playback on xbox, dvd addon for hd playback for 360, the silly gameboy colouriiish addons of nintendo when they still had the power to terrrorize the handheld market out of their monopolistic seat. Take for instance the sega megadrive or 32x and probably another bucketload of their crap they made.
Sony had none of this, I mean: nothing that MADE you upgrade, just the memory card. (which I find already a rotten thing to do muha! Power to the people! or not)
Anyway my comment about the budget vs normal package isnt about the socialist thing, it will put up a biiig barrier for devs.
You see, the playstation3 got a cheape.. lol I almost said cheap, the ps3 got 2 different packages too with 2 different pricetags, but both versions will play the standard. That way all games will make full use of the maximum. With xbox360 however, a portion of people will buy the budget version, the developers will know this and will go for profit maximalisation (doh?) and stay with the dvd. Thus effectively limiting, or downgrading if you will, the system specs to the budget version. It wasnt a smart move from bill, wherever he may be in his ethereal haunted gheist form.

Yes, but it has amny advanced features that Sony Online doesnt, like Gamer tags for user identification,
Avatars, or gamer pictures, for association with gamer tags, Mottos for display on gamer profiles, Gamer zones which represents your gaming style and influences player matchmaking (Recreation, Pro, Family, Underground), Game achievements are listed with gamer tags and can be compared with friends’ achievements, Reputation rating which is voted on by other players who decide to either prefer or avoid another player, Gamerscores which are a total of a player’s achievement points, Friends list, which is a list of a player’s chosen friends, Recent player list, which lists the last 50 players one user has played with, Xbox Live Marketplace content, Enhanced matchmaking using cumulative gamerscore, reputation, location/language profile and skill level.

In the long run the xbox 360 actually cost alot more then PS3 and thats just adding a very basic thing like playing online games.
400$ xbox 360 + 50$ for online play. after the generation of your being a xbox 360 owner mmm 6 years you will end up paying.
400$ + 300$ ( for 6 years of online service alone) = 700$.
there you have it sounds kool at 1st cheaper then PS3, but in the long run the xbox 360 is such a big rip off just like the wii.
i owned a xbox this generation but i will never pay for playing games online like i said, no matter how you put it.

I read really really really a lot about hd ”vs” blue ray.. and I think blu ray is gonna be TNB as well. The pc consumer market on the boards is also important you know. Probably most important, though people always like to diss the pc’s huge share in almost any hardware consumer developments.

God of War a 2 layer dvd, yes and its a PS2 games not PS3.
halo 2 another dual layer game and yes that game for xbox.
GTA-SA filled the entire one layer DVD and thats adding some serious compression tech.
xbox 360 game devs already having problems with the space on dual layer dvd’s.
Resistance a PS3 launch game 22gb big.
xbox 360 is not next gen. with that weak dvd format.

A console lasting for 10 years doesn’t mean anything. It’ll last as long as they produce and sell them.
As far as i’m concerned, a console lasts if you can still play it. Which is all my consoles. They still play well, I still have fun on them, so they’ve lasted.
All this bullsh*t about the ps2 lasting 10 years doesn’t make any difference to anything. Sales don’t mean anything. As long as the consumer is happy, and as long as the company makes a profit, nothing else matters.
Before you come up with “ps3 is teh futor” Shaka, remember that not everyone loves sony like you, and they’ll buy a console on their own decision, not yours. The ps3 is NOT the future. It’s the future for the people who buy it, just the same as the Wii is the future for the people who by a Wii. Technology doesn’t mean future. Technology progresses with time, but time is not dependant on technology.

Idiot. Link one says it is ranked third in electronic companies, Link 2 proves that Sony still is #3, and link 3 repeats that fact yet again.
The Forrester research is also based on the entire company, not just SCE. So Sony naturaly has a upper hand in trust from the beggening, as they nade electronic devices before. However, Forrester did not rate SCE indipedently, so the results are innacurate for SCE because it is coupled with its parent company.

Ps3 just made one big mistake.. i happen to know some hackers that can kill peoples pc’s OVER xfire, knowing that there is always a way to get past things. maybe there is a way to hack into peoples ps3’s and have a little fun by screwing up thier system.
Some people thinking that they are going to find the person that did that, WRONG, people that do this stuff change thier IP every day, so you cant get caught. If it does come out for the ps3, first things im going to encrypt, kill a couple of sites, then find a way to hack into this xfire and get into they ps3 system. maybe send something to wreck the harddrive or corrupt the downloads.
They made one big mistake, because they are pretty damn blind to know that there are hackers on xfire.
if it does come true, you might just be one of the victims of me or some of my other freinds >.
