Wii Will Not play DVD Movies

Nintendo didn’t mention anything about DVD playback during the two events in US and Japan. As investigative as they are, IGN went and asked Nintendo the hard question about DVD movie playback.
Nintendo PR boss Perin Kaplan confirmed that the console will not play DVD movies. She gives the reason that it makes the Wii cheaper for consumers, and because most people already own a DVD player.

First they announce it wil cost $249.99 and now this?! If I were MS I would seriously consider dropping the price of a core system to $275 and kick butt. Wii had me interested at first but 250 for Xbox 1 level graphics and no DVD playback option and throw in no support for HD ANYTHING. Nope … I’ll wait until the price drops to $149.99 in a couple of years time.

No it is not moronic … the point is not whether or not it will be used … it is just the principle of the thing. If all the other systems can do this … including old Xbx and PS/2 systems then this system should also have that as an option. It is just that simple. So since they decided to take away my choice then I won’t get it for that price. Now if it costs 199.99 and there was no DVD playback then fine but for $250 I want that option PERIOD.

Personally I’d rather save money - which could go towards another game or something.
It would be nice to have a microwave in there as well. But you can’t have everything you know.

The other consoles don’t have a microwave option so I don’t know what your point was in using that as an analogy. Again I’m not saying it (the DVD player) will get any use … just give consumers the choice like the other consoles do. It’s bad enough that there is no HD support and while people apparently don’t think this is so much of a big deal now wait until three years from now when devs really understand how to get the most out of the advanced hardware in the 360 and PS/3 and big screen LCD (and SED) technology is more affordable … boy are Wii people going to be in for a major shock in the difference between gaming experiences then. Like I said in 2-3 years I may get one but again who knows how good the PS/3 will look by then … especially if it comes down in price to below $500 by then.

DVD movies and DVD games are two different things- The DRM for DVD movies are much more complex.

Uh, it’s actualy a good deal. THe Wii itself would cost $170, so add that to the Nunchuck and Wiimote, which together cost $60. Then add Wii Sports- You have $280. Nintendo is giving us a $30 discount by buying the Wii. Also, Nintendo is using pretty advanced stuff in the Wii, considering the faster CPU nad better GPU, with LOWER power consumption than the GameCubes- While keeping the heat output more or less the same.
If anything is a rip off, it’s a PS3.

No’that’s smart. You have to pay royalties to include DVD playback, which jacks up the price by $30-$45. That is whythe XBox had a remote you had to buy to play DVDs, so that the royalties can be payed not in the console price- But in a add on for those who don’t want the price jacked up for somthing they don’t want.

Considering SONY and Microsoft have additional markets to draw money from they can take a hit on consoles. Losing $100-200 on each console sold doesn’t matter in the long run because they make profits on all the games and accessories sold. On top of that Microsoft makes a ridiculous amount on Windows and SONY on home entertainment stuff like TVs and speakers. What else does Nintendo have to rely on other than video games? If they sold everything taking a hit on the cost then they wouldn’t last very long considering all they do is sell video games. Think for a second here…
Also I’m not suprised at SONY’s price point at all. Look at all of their other products. For an HDTV that has the exact same specs on it as a SONY tv you can get something for $1000-2000 cheaper from Samsung easily. Same thing with stereos. Now that they announced the company restructuring around video games (last year I think it was) it just makes sense that they are going to start looking for a lot more money coming in from the mindless fanboys that will buy anything with a SONY logo on it.
This ideology can be seen when they first announced the system price and said all that crap like “any true gamer will buy our system” and “we think that everyone will buy our system because of it’s unique experience that you can’t get anywhere else”. Let’s see about these “unique” experiences…their online functionality stolen from Microsoft…the “PS button” stolen from Microsoft…the added functionality of the motion sensitive controller…stolen from Nintendo. What exactly do they have?
SONY treats their customers like crap and after a while people will realize it and stop supporting them blindly. Every first gen PS2 died and what did they do about it? Oh yea…you had to buy another console that contributed to that “100 million” sold. Then all the people that switched out their consoles with the slim PS2 that came out also contributed to that number. There was a study on this and considering 1 person could = roughly 3 systems I don’t think it’s exactly accurate.
Shaka is awesome though because no one else can keep me entertained like you can. I love hopeless fan boys. I bet if SONY released a new PSP with a touch screen you’d say it’s revolutionary and somehow the DS ripped it from them. Get a life.

Hmm why is the PS3 worth $600? It has the same power as the 360 essentially. The 360 has a more powerful graphics card and more RAM whereas the PS3 has more space on their discs and more raw processing power. It all equals out in the end. Sure you can run Blu-Ray movies on the PS3, but according to Microsoft they are going to be having a bundle of the HD-DVD addon along with the 360 for a cheaper price than the $600 PS3. I don’t see how PS3 is worth $200 more over the 360…
On top of that a lot of PS3’s exclusives are gone…GTA4 will even have exclusive episodic content on the 360 that the PS3 version will not have. I don’t hate SONY’s consoles at all…I’ve had plenty of fun on my PS1 and PS2, but I know a bad deal when I see it and the PS3 is a ripoff. Have fun with your $600 system…I’ll get one when it drops $200 to a more reasonable price because for some reason Namco doesnt release Tekken on anything else…those @#$!@%^$s.

I can give reasons, however.
The PS3 isn’t worth $599 because it relies too much on a new format, has too few games at launch, and is not worth the $200 increase form the XBox 360 for marginaly better graphics.
The Wii is worth $250 because it offers a brand new way to play games, has advanced technology, is $30 less than buying Wii Sports/Wiimote/Wii/Nunchuck, has over 104 games being developed, and of course, Nintendo Exclusives.

U know that Apple used to use a similar chip in the G4 as the PS2 (PS2/Emotion Engine was tweaked for gaming.) This time around Apple chose to go intel and turn down the “Cell” chip. I guess not everyone think’s the cell is the best like u Shaka.

The PS2 I have back home, by myself, and even to this day by others in my family, is NEVER used to play movies. The only time I attempted to watch a movie on a PS2 was one time when I was in the US Navy, on a ship and in a compartment that had a television and a PS2 right there. And this was because there were no good games available. There are NO considerations for whether or not a video game console plays DVD movies when I am looking to buy one. I buy video game consoles, well… for the interactive experience. And that is exactly why Nintendo has got the industry covered.

Nintendo’s biggest mistake was making the SNES without a VHS player. Man, what a bonehead move that was. I mean, what is the point of a games console if you can’t even watch movies on it?

Wow, shaka, it’s clear you have no idea how the Game Industry works.
Sony only makes the games if their devolpment studios make them, and seeing as Sony doesn’t have development studios- Only 2nd parties, they don’t MAKE games.
Nintendo, however, makes many of it’s games (Sans Metroid Prime, which is made by Retro studios, which was headed my the creators of Metroid).
Nintendo makes Zelda, Mario, Metroid(Has a strong influance in Prime, being that Nintendo co-creates it, and many others.
Way to not do research, shaka.

Actualy, SCE Studios Santa Monica was accuired and it’s name changed (Much like SCE Liverpool), however, a First Party developer must be founded in-house: Somthing which neither Liverpool nor Santa Monica were. Therefore Sony itself does not make games, but rather accuired divisions do.
However, they do fall uder the catigory of “Accuired First Parties”.

As Sony had to ACCUIRE a buisness to make games for them, it can not be considered 1st party in the normal sense- Most 1st parties are developed and form in house, with prime examples being NST or MGS.
Now dispite that fact that it is the “accuired” first party, it would be innacurate to say that Sony makes their own games. You can say that a First Party makes Sony’s games, but Sony itself deos not make them.

this is stupid how many sony fans there are dissin the wii. what has sony ever done thats inovative, ps1 controller riped of snesw controller, eyetoy ripped of eyetoy thingy for the n64, the lightguns copied by the scope fingy for the nes, analog stick copied from the n64, i bet you didnt know how cds came about. sony was helping nintendo create cds that would work on an add on for the snes, soon after sony make the ps1 with exactly the same things, face it sony, if it wernt for nintendo you couldnt survive, dont dis nintendo cos sony will probly copy what eva you dissing.

1. I don’t need two DVD players
2. Wii is fun, which is the whole point of playing a game
3. Wii is affordable to the average person, including the games and controllers
4. I personally don’t need high graphics to be entertained
5. The Wii can be played in many different ways
6. Wii is completely backwards compatible with the GameCube, no if’s and’s or but’s
I have never seen a Wii in a store yet, I see just a few Xbox 360’s, no Elites, and I always see a few PS3s.
Deciding what console to buy:
I checked out the PS3 games. The ones I saw were already on the other consoles or not something I’d enjoy. Games were mostly around $60.
I checked out the Xbox 360 games. A few pretty good games, very similiar if not the same graphics as PS3, constroller a bit uncomfortable, but I’ve heard about a lot of problems. Games range from $30 to $60.
I checked out the Wii games. Lots of kid games, but also a lot of “all ages” games; pool, golf, bowling, ect with Wii Sports and Wii Play. But wait… Some of the games include a controller or other device. And don’t seem to go over $55. So I can get this cool steering wheel and a game for less than the other consoles…
And I can get WiiPlay, with 9 different games/activities plus a Wiimote…
Everyone wants to save money. Wii helps you do that. It’s cheap, but its fun, but it is a good quality type of fun. Parents can play with their kids for once in their lives instead of scowling and complaining about them always sitting in front of the TV. Now they get exercise, fun, family time, all in one, for a good price.
You have to see it from other point of views, otherwise you’re just ignorant. In this case, this is the point of view consumers might have.

Ok i just want a player connected to my tv not two or three. So If wii could play dvd movies it would make it much better.
I love the controler. But Graphics is almost psp2 graphics. And U can anly play game. Very cheap Campared to other
PS3 Has a a normal controler. awesome graphics! HD DVD playback can run linux so can run most softwares. word prossecing, jukebox, multimedia playback. cost a hell lot more.
