HD-DVD/Blu-ray Hybrid On The Way
September 21st, 2006 by Darren Stevens in Hardware, PC, Software, Technology, Xbox360
There’s no doubt that a big part of the whole next-gen/HD war is about the HD-DVD vs. Blu-ray. Now Warner Bros has filed a patent for a hybrid disc that can run on both players, and even play good old DVDs. Since the discs are rather complicated to make, the price would be higher than regular HD-DVD and Blu-ray discs. However, as long as there are two formats on the market, this thing has a chance of succeeding, provided of course its backed up by the other studios.

Old news. And it’s speculation

It’s not old, the patent was filed a few days ago. Which also makes it non-specualtion.

So far it is speculation. And their has been talk of a hybrid for a long time. But perhaps it was just talk

The technology is there, the patent has been filed, how is that “speculation”?

It’s speculation on whether this will be mainstream or not. It’s also speculation whether Blu-ray or HD-DVD will be the final format. Patents are made everyday, only a few of them actually ends up on the store shelves

I guess you’re right there. Imagine if the hybrid becomes popular, Sony and Toshiba would sue the crap out of Warner. Billions spent on next-gen and Warner runs away with the victory. That would be sweet.

Give it a rest already hd-dvd is weak and it will fail.
15gb per layer only?

Not going to become mainstream simply because its inefficient.
Why have to same movie twice on one disc? Its just not cost effective.
Studios would much rather have one disc format fail and one succeed.
Think Darwin.
