Analyst Calls PS3 Price Cut “Ridiculous”
September 22nd, 2006 by Darren Stevens in Business
Sony surprised everyone by announcing a price cut on the 20 GB version even before it hits the market. While that is a good sign; lower prices and an indication that they are listening to complaints from the consumers, business wise it isn’t that clever.
According to several analysts, it’s a “sign of weakness” to lower the price at this point. Japanese analyst from Retela Crea Securities, Yoku Ihara, said
“It’s ridiculous to decide to cut the price before they start selling the PlayStation 3. They may cut the price again if sales don’t go well.

Perhaps Japan would see this as a sign of weakness, but I think most Americans would see this as positive.
I know that if I was at all interested in the PS3 and they had a price cut, I’d be jumping for joy.

Yeah… its just SO stupid that they are lowering their prices to reach a wider base of consumers. SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO stupid and weak.

Japan is crazy:P
I think they should have kept the price up as well, so they can lower it later. When you keep the price up in the start, it looks exclusive and price creates demand in a high tech consumer market in which some products are scarce. Right now it indeed looks like they are scared.

Really though how what difference does it make … it is still going to sell out regardless of what people say. Seems to me Sony could have waited but decided that since they came up short on the numbers for the Japanese launch they would do something nice for the Japanese market.

Oops … meant “how much difference” …

I’m not doubting the PS3 will sell out in any country(Due to the crazy-low numbers at launch, but weither or not it does well after that point is beyond me.
IMO, I don’t think it’ll do well, but that’s just me.

I think it’s strange to call it ridiculous. As a gamer it’s nice to save some money. On the other hand, it would have outsold no matter what due to shortages. I dont know when they will have a more steady production, but I think they should save the price cuttings till then
