During an interview with Wired, Sony’s Phil Harrison confirmed that the PS3 will have region free games, including those downloaded from the PS3 online service. This means games from other territories can be played on a console, which is good news for the gamers primarily interested in importing Japanese games. Harrison also said that Blu-ray movies will not be region free.
A week ago, Nintendo made a PR bummer by announcing the Wii as region free, when in fact it wasn’t.

1Great news! (Finally)
but what about old games, PS2 & PS1.
Will people be able to play their JAP Copy of Grandia or USA Copy of Xenosaga on their EU/AUS PS3?
does anybody know? (apart from the boys and girls at sony)

9Hey it’s all good, Emerald. I mean at least Nintendo still stands to make a $248 profit off of every console sold, right?

10Hey, Emerald, i’m sure that the vibrate function on the Wiimote should keep you from feeling too masculine at night.

11Mmm, I love when fanboys can’t counter logic and instead resort to insults. It really shows that they can present and support an argument. >_>
Or that they have nothing.

12Come this holiday season when there’s roughly 1 PS3 to every 850 people the quote “or that they have nothing” will fit right in place. Can someone say forced launch?

16Taylor2k that’s part of the PS3 problem. I don’t want to pay for the freaking media, I want to pay for the game! I shouldn’t have overpriced software beacuse they chose to use the rarest of media. Sure manufacturing prices will eventually go down, but I doubt that’ll lower retail prices for us on the games.
Games shouldn’t be treated as oil.

24I’ve just got a PS3 unit and I believe it’s been imported from Japan. The unit seems to refuse to play PAL region DVDs when I insert them. Any assistance on this one would be appreciated.

25USA versions of the PS3 will not play PAL encoded DVDs, at least with firmware 1.5. Perhaps when the EU version is released this will become possiable. Hopefully a hack in in the works…

30I have bought my PS3 in middle east and I imported many Blurays from USA and they all have been OK till Pirates of the Caribbean 3.So three is a region coding on these stupid things. I believe HD-DVD will not region code….If bluray are clever, they better switch the region coding off cause all will head off the other route. (Including me)
