With next-gen graphics and technology, the cost of making games has sky-rocketed. Today it’s not uncommon for a game to cost $20-$30 million to produce, but Epic’s Mark Rein says Gears of War cost them around $10 million to make. That includes a team of 20-30 people, working for two years.

It’s of course a lot easier for Epic, since they are the owners of Unreal Engine 3, which also powers Gears of War. He also said that outsourcing played a big part in keeping the cost down, where some of the game was developed at Epic Games China.

Epic will also be releasing the Unreal Engine 3 powered Unreal Tournament 2007 for PS3 and PC early next year.

He’s pretty arrongant to say that, Epic’s got it a lot easier than all the other developers. Epic even charges, what, $750,000 for a license of UE3?

Epic got it lucky that there rich but 4real I may be wrong but Gears Of War looks like a RE4 copy with Halo infused in it. The over the shoulder look, the chainsaws, everything. This game will probably dissapoint people. Games like Bioshock should get more coverage if U ask me.

  3. Anuban Says:

That price was for a royalty free UE2 license. A license for UE3 costs roughly 2 mill.

Gears is no RE4 copy … not by a long shot. I got to see it in action at the GDC and all I can say is people are going to be very surprised by how fresh and original it is. No one will ever confuse this game with Halo that’s for certain. No one is going to be disappointed except the typical few jaded gamers and the people who can’t admit they were wrong.

Yes, GoW should be very refreshing, definitely not a Halo game infused with RE4.

But I agree, BioShock deserves even more attention than it is getting, but I can still see myself being slightly disappointed with it, I’m worried some of the gameplay will be repetitive, but I hope I’m completely wrong.

Actually the boys @ 1up did mention the game is a bit like RE4 with the multi tapping button mash for certain sequences. I kinda remember Cliffy always mentioning RE4 in certain interviews so I’m pretty sure it inspirded. Anyway the game will be off teh chain-saw…=] Multi-player will own. The true shooter comes out the same week Rain Six Vegas.
