Wii Sensor Bar Can’t Take Sunlight?

A user posts on the official Nintendo forums about his experience playing the Wii at the Nintendo World Store in New York. It turns out that the sensor bar can’t work properly (or work at all) if used in direct sunlight. User OMBRENOIR17 writes:
For about an hour or so, the sun shone right into the store, the two MP3:C kiosks had to have curtains above them, and the Wii Sports Tennis and Shooting Game kiosks were unplayable since they were “shrouded” in sunlight.
Of course, if direct sunlight is shining into your sensor bar, it’s likely that it’s also shining directly into your TV, in which case you wouldn’t be able to see what you’re doing anyway.

It should be very interesting the complaints of the Wii that is. I mean if U look at some of their Ninty promotional pictures some of them take place in a sunny living room. This could be a big problem for Nintendo. Hopefully they will correct it.

They mentioned this at E3 it doesn’t me that your room cant be brightly light it just means prolonged exposure to sun light will mean you have to move the sensor bar out of the sun light and wait for about 3-5 miutes. nintendo knew this, its not a fault!

Nintendo has a bit of a problem here, since the target audience for Wii is 3 year olds, the parents obviously dont like darkened rooms all day long.

I fail to see what the problem is, the sensor bar sits next to the TV screen so if its bathed in sunlight you won’t be able to see the screen anyway. Anyone who is genuinely worried about this must be a little bit simple or not realise how annoying any game with sun on the screen is.

Looking at childrens psychology, kids, untill they reach a certain age, try to behave like, and copy the behavioral patterns, of grown-ups. They dont speak to kids considerably younger than themselves, and they definately dont play childish mario games. They play PLAYSTATION, because it’s way more COOOOOL. Lets look at some stats from Gamespress releases and industry figures (MCV)
The Nintendo DS is currently the best selling handheld console on the market outselling PSP in every market even though PSP is higher spec and more ‘uber kewl’ as you would say.
Over 40% of Nintendo DS owners are female. Nintendo has a range of software called Touch! Generations with games like Nintendogs and Electroplankton to appeal to non-gamers. Brain Training which Nintendo launched last year has been a massive global success and is targeted at the over 40s.
Whereas Sony and Xbox sell shooting, racing and adventure games targeted at a male 13-30 year old audience.
Sooooo Nintendo sells to girls, old people and gamers
Microsoft and Sony sell to gamers only. Take Peter Moore’s recent speech on who the ideal Xbox 360 owner is, 25-30 male, likes playing online, has played mmorpgs has been in a gaming guild before……. Sony has a very similar audience.
Final point on this Wii focus is on quick fun games that anyone can pick up and play in some down time. Sony focus is on immersive time consuming games that require hours and hours infront of the screen.

From what I’ve seen on the intarweb, it seems Nintendo fans seem to be able to keep their wits about them more easily than Sony fans. A Sony fan will be quick to make derrogatory remarks to anyone who doesn’t think like them, whereas Nintendo fans will still be insulting, but with some subtlety and wit. Perhaps the fans emulate the companies they stand behind?
For example, Shaka commented “wii= biggest rip off in gaming history. Fact!”
If this individual honestly believes that this statement is an example of a real fact, then I’m sorry, you have just lost your argument. Confusing fact and opinion is common in the lower grades of school, so Shaka should be excused.
Every post on DB now seems like a futile battle: Shaka and Doom vs. rational thinking. This really should end.

First of all get your facts straight. There are no 60$ games out for the Wii. Shaka. I start believing some people when they say you pulled those numbers out your ass. PSP hasn’t reached 20 millions sold units yet, and Nintendo made a press release months ago that it had sold over 21 million DS consoles.

Oh man seriously. Who looks at handhelds anyways? I’m not talking about those for it doesnt interest me in the slightest. Why? The games are too fucking basic and kiddy. Why would I wanna waste time on the train or buss doing mario party when I can listen to music or read a F*ing book, or even a conversation for a change.
If i’d buy a portable gameconsole It would ocourse be a psp since the games are more mature and look friggin’ awesome compared to the 8 bit DS with pencil. Damn I’d be so fucking ashamed if a hot girl would see me play that thing buahah! Anyway, NES was like eehm 20 years ago? Sony has ruled the home console market for the last 10 years, nuff said about past things.
So where did u all got the notion ps3 won’t sell? (besides reading silly fanboy news and being fanboys yourself hehehe) You must all be joking right? The ps3 has an absolutely huge fanbase due to 2 generations of backwards compatibily, it’s got the best system specs and it’s games can be larger (thus bigger/prettier) then all the others.
The difference? in 1 year I guess 100 bucks between a 360 and .. I’m not even gonna compare the wii since it’s not even on the same market. Wii is budget gimmick market/child systems. Both systems can live next to each otehr since nintendo is for kids and ps3 for adolescents/adults. Wii will probably have another pie like the 10-20% nintendo had the years before, the xbox and ps3 will compete equally I guess. Unless either of the giants (not Wii, ofcourse) comes out with some ridiculous exclusives, I can’t see any of the 2 winning.

Last global sales figures for the Nintendo DS were 21 Million in July so obviously higher now. Last PSP figures I remember were sub 20 Million, the thing that people often confuse with Sony is shipped and sold, they often release shipment figures which include all the consoles rotting on Game store shelves.
Lets do EU figures as we live in Europe.
Latest EU sales figures for DS 6 Million and for 11 consecutive weeks before September (latest figures) DS held 70% share of the market.
Go to the shop today $haka and spend some of your pocket money on MCV it is the games industry trade publication for the UK. It will be an interesting education for you as it has week on week sales figures for all formats.
The others have a point too, if youre gonna quote Gamespot link an article or at least say when. PSP outsold DS in its first few months in all markets iirc, but once all the fanboys were happily whacking off over UMD porn the sales dried up.
Also on the overall console sales thing I believe PS2 has sold something like 70 million worldwide and GameBoy is over 100 million now. I’ll find the source for this as I cant remember the exact nos and I don’t want to pull figures out of my butt like Doom ^^

Totally off topic but: if the psp has already a 30% market share on a monopoly market after being there for just 1,5 shoddy years… this is a very bad thing for nintendo.
They just lost 30% marketshare and counting.
As for the argument that millions shipped isnt exact price figures, it’s only halftrue, as in the sense that: nintendo hasn’t shipped more, so it’s units aren’t all sold as well. It’s an unreliable figure to be exact, but teh 10-20 million from sony does say it sells. Sorry but you draw a wrong conclusion here ruined (as usual)

I can see your point Doom. But first, the gameboy only had monopoly the first couple of years after 1989. I dont know the exact time when some other hardware developers tried to compete with Nintendo, but Sony was definately the first one who succeed.
Second. The DS has sold so fast, that Nintendo in some periods haven’t been able to meet demand. So even IF the PSP weren’t around, they couldn’t have sold better. And remember, the DS is the fastest selling console to date.
That being said, I dont think the two portables influence the sales numbers of each other. As we have discussed endlessly, the games for the two are so differently for each other, so gamers, hardcore or nongamers, dont really have to make a hard choice between the two. I think there are much more similarities between 360 and PS3, if you get my point

It doesnt mean you are the only producer of the product, it means you are such a big producers and hold so much of the market there is literally no competition. So yes, the gameboy has been a monopoly for 10 years straight, if not longer.
Nah I do think the psp has taken a big share of the nintendo handhelds, and also created a new part yes. But no, I think nintendo should worry on the long term if the psp/ psp2 /psp 3 wont keep taking more and more from them.

Because there has never been one sole provider for the goods(in this case a Handheld gaming system), the Game Boy has never had a Monopoly.
I also agree that if the PSP continues the market it has created, there will be some very serious compition. However, I can’t see Sony continuing the PSP line now, but prehaps at some later point.
