Free Linux OS For PS3

Terra Soft announced that their Yellow Dog Linux v5.0 software will be released for the PS3 this November, free of charge, of course. This gives some confirmation to Sony’s “PS3 is a computer” theory, since Yellow Dog Linux v5.0 is a full operating system for the PS3, bundled with Mozilla Firefox, Thunderbird and OpenOffice.org.
The new Linux kernel will take full advantage of Sony’s Cell chip and other hardware, and includes the next generation desktop software “E17″. The Linux OS will run side-by-side with PS3’s own Linux-based operating system.

It’s about time but I am now seeing why the price is justified. If you get a PS3 you know you are getting alot of features and good technology(if there is no disk read errors or overheating).

And this is necessary for what? I mean why do I care that there are two OSes inside a GAMING rig. Seems like a sham to me just to TRY and justify that ridiculous price tag. But hey I’m not getting one until a couple of years so maybe by then this will actually have some bearing on the actual GAMING part of the PS/3.

First “good” ps3 news for months and it doesn’t even come from Sony.

I’m gonna buy a ps3 so I can run word processing applications on my TV. It’s all the rage.

“It’s about time but I am now seeing why the price is justified. ”
WTF cause u can do word processing and check email?? Who the hell wants to do that on there couch?
A console is for playing games. I don’t know if u know this but a TV is not the best place for browsing the web.

Friggin sweet, if you put it on your pc, you actually got a class AA+ pc for only 500, that’s a great deal!

” A console is for playing games. I don’t know if u know this but a TV is not the best place for browsing the web. ”
Why? because it’s a tv? dude, if you’re able to watch television, play games, surf the net, run PC applications and watch movies all on the same monitor, what difference would it make if they called it a tv or not? amazing!

WebTv?? yeah that was great too.

The more you can do with the PS3 the better. I would like to play games, surf the net, watch movies, and all other entertainment mediums on the same monitor. Not that I’m lazy or anything, but it would make things just a little bit more convenient.

Marquees ”WebTv?? yeah that was great too”
Jealous @ limited gaming-only internet app on his 360 costs him money on a monthly basis as well.
Might I say: ‘hah’

Jealous no way. I remember WebTV oh my the pain. And seriously the only u can justify a price is by saying the online is free, does not tell me how good it is. It’s just Sony taking the easy way out.
PPLLLUUUUSSSS there is also a reason why almost all x360 games are online and Sony’s aren’t.
Sony still has a shit-ton to prove when it comes to online actually so does Nintendo.
Free does not equal good.

Free equals all users with internet will use this
October 22nd, 2006 at 3:19 am
that’s fine but what u bought a $600 console for was to play games and play online. sadly alot of games u find on PS3 and x360, the PS3 ones are not Online. ::giggle::
So it’s Free!!! but we only have 1st party games that use this free service. Wait a sec it’s only 1 game that goes online wtf! 1 year after x360 and u can’t even take ur PS3 games online shame shame.

‘the PS3 ones are not Online”
And you have played exactly how many of these? Or should I rephrase: how many playstation titles have you ever played actually?
Fool.
Too bad I won’t remember you 2 years from now when all the ps3 users who got the internet are online and outnumber the xkids 1:10
October 24th, 2006 at 3:52 am
