More Trouble For Battlefield 2142

bf2142 spywareThe preferred topic these days surrounds EA’s Battlefield 2142 (our review here), first criticized for its in-game ads, then for the spyware tracking the ads, and now a new patch is causing similar trouble for the publisher. Patch 1.01, released yesterday, may require some users to uninstall their latest Windows Security Update, in order to play the game (or in order for the spyware to work). From EA:

“Players who have the Windows security update KB917422 installed may suffer from an application error when running Battlefield 2142. This error can be solved by uninstalling the KB917422 update.”

What is Windows security update KB917422? Microsoft explains:

“A security issue has been identified in the Windows Kernel that could allow an attacker to compromise your Windows-based system and gain control over it.”

Removing KB917422 will, of course, make it easier for EA’s spyware to work. I’ve installed Patch 1.01, and haven’t experienced any problems. My antivirus program however, identifies the spyware from EA, sometimes resulting in crashes to desktop in order to inform me of “malicious software”. Malicious indeed…

I’m glad I didn’t buy this game. It’s amazing how you can take a popular and fun franchise and just throw it in the trash. Way to go!

Only 5 maps and no titan mod available in single player, that’s what I discovered after dowloading the game ! I wont buy another battlefield game eyes closed, 49 euros wasted … I prefer going back to play DC or POE2.

What a shame, I really wanted that game too.

Download a fucking gigabyte of demo, only for it to not run on a suitably spec’d PC. Fuck EA.
