Analyst P.J. McNealy from American Technology Research predicts that Sony introduce two new PSP versions in the beginning of 2007. Both will be smaller and more compact than the current PSP, one having a built in hard drive, while the other will use flash based storage.

According to McNealy, Sony is trying not only to compete with the Nintendo DS, but also with the Apple iPod, by introducing a smaller, hard drive based PSP, capable of playing music, movies, and games. Sony’s Peter Dille responded to the rumors in an interview with GameDaily:

“I’ve heard about that, but haven’t seen that report. This would fall into the ‘We do not comment on rumor or speculation’ category, which I know is kind of the canned line, but honestly we don’t have anything to add to that”

Well with the *complete* lack of support for the first PSP in terms of decent games, there’s no way in hell I’ll be splashing out for any premature sequels.

I have a feeling that many other people would agree with me on that one. Sony should either get their thumb out of their arse with the first one, or forget all about the market because there’s no way such an abandonment would be rewarded.

Makes sense, PSP has totally failed to make an impact due to shit software support and a lack of interest in UMD.

I’ve had a PSP since Japanese launch and the only time ive even turned it on since the week I got it was for Grand Theft Auto. Its not a good sign when I have been given a fair few games since then and can’t be bothered to try them.

Portability is the key, only tech heads care about having an 8 inch screen when you need a backpack to carry the damn thing around. Make PSP pocket-sized and it would be a decent product.

UMD film is a crock though, the biggest virgin in London has hardly any films on sale now so that must be a sign of the decline. Its looking like Mini Disc again (aka Sony flogging a dead horse) and yes I did have a minidisc player :P
