Review: Icemat 2nd Edition

October 27th, 2006 Posted in Driving, Gear

icemat logo.gifThe original Icemat received great credit from the gaming community, delivering precise and smooth movements. The second edition has been out for a while, offering a much bigger surface than its predecessor. Full review after the jump.

icemat1.jpgThe 2nd edition Icemat consists of a glass plate measuring 10 x 12 inches, or 25cm x 30cm. It should offer enough room for the most extreme movements. The polished glass offers very smooth and precise movement using the bundled “padsurfers” (tiny pieces of plastic you stick under your mouse).

Because of the smooth surface, dust or small particles are on the mouse pad will feel very clearly when using the mouse, so you’ll probably end up wiping it clean on a daily basis. I tested the mouse using the high-end Razer Copperhead mouse (our review here), in several types of games (FPS/RTS/Sports). The accuracy and movements improved in all tests, although I expected the difference on a high-end mouse like the Copperhead minimal, it was quite in fact significant. I’ve been using the Icemat now for a week, and the difference is clear, not only in gaming, but in general as well. Movement is fluid and precise.

icemat2.jpgThe Icemat is meant for enthusiasts who are likely to spend lots of money on a high-end mouse and gaming gear in the first place. Like all enthusiast products, it comes at a price, $39.99 to be precise. There are several colors to chsose from, but the most popular, and the undoubtedly coolest looking, is the black version. While it’s understandable that a product of this quality carries a high price-tag, it’s still a somewhat big turn-off for many gamers.

I’ve been using the Icemat ever since the original came out years ago. Couldn’t dream of using anything else.

Actually the price is the only reason I don’t have one of these. Got a new logitec mouse, great gaming mouse and I don’t have any mouse pad at all.

BTW, Icemat should make their own mouse
