DX10 was engineered from the ground with Vista in mind … MS says that while it may be technically possible to make it backwards compatible with XP that due to the level of difficulty it would be impracticle to put so many resources and so much effort into a previous generation OS.

Oh you’ll definitely need to update your video card to play DX10 games, no one is arguing that.

There is no reason that those video cards won’t be able to run on Windows XP because they will be PC-E and not some new Vista exclusive video card slot.

If software is the only thing getting in the way of getting DX10 to work on XP, then I don’t see how it can not be cracked to work. I don’t fully understand how DX10 works and why it would require Vista though… I’ll leave that to the crackers!

There will never be DX10 for XP. The architecture precludes this from happening. But just about all the games will work with just DX9 so you don’t need to upgrade right away. You just won’t be able to crank things up all the way and you won’t see the performance gains … DX10 allows for better fps at higher resolutions and with more eye candy turned on.

ditto I don’t plan on purchasing Vista for a while after it’s out so hopefully there can be a work around found for Dx10.

I wonder if the cracking community will be able to get DirectX 10 on WindowsXP… I don’t see Crisis doing well if it is Vista exclusive.
