Atari Founder Disses PS3
November 9th, 2006 by Kevin Cortez in Business
In a recent interview with Red Herring, Atari founder Nolan Bushnell dissed Sony and their PlayStation 3, claiming Sony “shot themselves in the foot”, and says that there’s a high probability of the console failing, with less than a million consoles sold by this time next year.
“The price point is probably unsustainable. For years and years Sony has been a very difficult company to deal with from a developer standpoint. They could get away with their arrogance and capriciousness because they had an installed base. They have also historically had horrible software tools. You compare that to the Xbox360 with really great authoring tools [and] additional revenue streams from Xbox live… a first party developer would be an idiot to develop for Sony first and not the 360. People don’t buy hardware, they buy software.
He went on to say that the success of the PlayStation and PlayStation 2 were both accidental, were Sony was in the right place at the right time. The PS3 has pretty much sold out on all pre-orders, and will probably be sold out for months to come. We’ll see how things go, and if Herring’s prophecies turn out to be true.

I like the way this guy thinks. I’m sure Sony will sell far more than a million but I think his general observations are worth being aware of.

I think this guy is still sour about the p.o.s. atari jaguar system tanking. Maybe Atari should’ve piggy-backed off of Nintendo just like Sony (by working together on a console then backing out taking all the plans).
Sony’s practices need revamping definitely but I hardly see them failing w/ the PS3. As long as they can keep their software dev aliances intact (Squaresoft, Namco, etc) for exclusive games, they should be fine.

I think exclusive games are going to go the way of the dinosaur within the next 3 years. There may a couple of titles but the slew of exclusive games we are used to seeing in the past is no longer viable for companies to really make huge profits. Sure Sony, Nintendo and MS will have their own studios to make games but beyond that the horizon is shrinking.

I’m going to take his comments with a grain of salt. How many successful consoles has Atari released?
