Wii-DVD Confirmed For North America
November 14th, 2006 Posted in Business
Nintendo previously confirmed rumors of releasing a Wii with DVD-playback in Japan in early 2007, now the company has announced plans of introducing the new Wii in North America in “late 2007″. GameDaily writes:
“Nintendo of America’s Public Relations Manager Matt Atwood said that a price has not yet been determined, but that the DVD-enabled Wii would come at a higher price than the standard Wii console ($249) because of the ‘extra cost required to implement DVD playback”
Apparently many people have a request to play DVD movies on their Wii, since Nintendo is introducing the new Wii. Or, for some reason, potential Wii buyers don’t have a DVD player yet.

Man I mentioned this in may last post … a bit late but better than never. And yes as I initially said when they first announced the Wii would not have this feature it is only a matter of time since you just can’t ignore the fact that both competitors offer this feature.

And that last comment of yours was really unnecessary … of course we all have at least one DVD player .. it is a matter of value and bang for your buck. It’s just one of those things that shouldn’t be a second thought. Like clocks on many appliances that have ZERO need for them … people just expect it and the companies that don’t do it suffer. So Nintendo really had no choice … I don’t even know what they were thinking at first. This is supposed to be a next-gen system and at the very least ALL next-gen should come equipped with DVD playback capability.

Yep … and watch so will most other people once it is released … like I said value value value and people like useless features or haven’t you been living on the same planet as me … I admit it’s useless but if my other consoles can do it (especially current-gen systems … and this is a next-gen system)
Like I said above one of the criteria’s for any system going forward (now that it has been established by PS2, Xbox, PS3, Xbox 360) is having DVD playback, so if you claim you are next gen you HAVE to offer that as at least an option. And apparently the execs at Nintendo see it the same way. If the market demands it don’t argue with them … keep people happy and give them what they want so you mitigate your losses.
Look at MS … instead of going with 256 Ram they listened to Epic who let them know it was going to make a big difference for gamers so they spent an extra billion instead of saying “nah, that’s good enough”. And believe me they will also be releasing a larger HD next year sometime. Again listen to what the market demands … if you can afford it then do it because the benefits will usually outweigh the losses.

I don’t know if I agree with that. The Wii is targeted as a family device i.e. the Family room should be the home of the Wii, which means you are hooking into a preexisting system that probably already has a dvd player so with that thought in mind i will not be buying the dvd playback Wii.
The 360 plays dvds, the ps2, the dvd player, my bose 321 I think I can save a few bucks and skip this.
Also by your reasoning the 360 should have a web broweser soon….

It’s not really needed, everyone has a DVD player, I’ve seen Japanese toasters with dvd playback.
I think if you had a choice, Wii = $250 or Wii + DVD = $275, then I couldn’t think of any sane person getting the $275 version.

Like I said … Nintendo shares my view and the viewpoint of millions … its not about who is right or wrong … its business. I thought you guys got that part of the equation. And if you did you know in business you have to do certain things your competitors do …
All your reasoning applies equally to both other consoles as well … But guess what that didn’t stop them … one of them even went so far as to integrate the next step up from DVDs into their system (albeit at a hefty price) …
And for the record I don’t expect people to agree with me … but recognize the reality of the situation. This is no longer being discussed it is being done. So really all this conjecture and banter is moot. And again I am glad they got it. I’d easily spend the extra 25 bucks for that added functionality and so would most other people. The thing that usually kicks in for MOST consumers is “I want the top of the line even if there are features I won’t use” or how else do you think corporations and individuals get so rich in this Global economy. I guess I am just a real pragmatist.

” Apparently many people have a request to play DVD movies on their Wii.. ”
It’s hard to believe that Nintendo has just recently discovered this! u made some good points, anuban. apparently, Nintendo finally took someone’s advice- uhh, the market maybe -and decided to catch up with the other consoles in terms of equipping their paper weight with an additional function. Good judgment, Nintendo- late, but good.

It’s about time Nintendo start waking up. Good move.

Man this is months old but lawl at comments ya its goes from a paperweight to a good system cause it play DVDs when DVDs are already bein replaced by HD-DVD and Bluray. The Wii is selling pretty well for not playin DVD’s huh
id say the majority dont care enough to wait a year to get a DVD version. Don’t think many people at the time will buy an additional Wii just for an extra dvd player or try to get rid of the old one for the ELITE WII NOW WITH A DVD PLAYER man if Nintendo got with the times it would have Bluray or HD DVD but those are to expensive at the moment. Ho hUm.

Well it is now Q3 in 2007 with no Wii DVD player to be seen or heard but last I read, Nintendo is backorded a half-million units that are already paid for and it is still nearly impossible to find a Wii in a store for more than a few hours but you will see walls of PS3 and XBOX360’s. Microsoft learned thier lesson and manufacture more consoles however it cannot be said about the PS3, they just are not selling and recently the President of Sony’s console division was quoted as saying they will never drop the price of the PS3 despite the lagging sales, which by the way is nearly half that of the Wii in US sales alone.
