PS3 Won’t Upscale 720p Games To 1080i

November 16th, 2006 Posted in News

ps31.jpgIf you own an HDTV set and plan on getting a PS3, you may want to check the settings of your television. If it supports 720p and 1080i than you have nothing to fear, if not, you may want to purchase a new television in a year or so. The PS3 won’t upscale games that are 720p to 1080i if you have a 1080i television, instead it will downgrade it to 480p. This is bad news for the many that have somewhat older HD televisions that can only output in 480i, 480p, and 1080i. For comparison, the Xbox 360 can upscale games that were designed for 720p to 1080i on the same televisions. Some games that were designed for 720p on the PS3 that will be downgraded to 480p if you don’t have the proper television are: Resistance: Fall of Man, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2007, Need For Speed: Carbon, and NHL 2k7. It is unknown if this can be fixed with a firmware upgrade later on during the PS3’s lifespan.

  1. Michael Says:

I will not buy any PS3 games when I can buy the XBOX version as all of the XBOX games are in 1080I or 1080p. 720p is old HD. So sony I will never buy a game as long as you make games with bad graphics. Why is this so hard for a “NEXT GEN MACHINE”. Microsoft has all its games ready for any TV?
