Developer Codemasters shows off a brand new game engine for Colin McRae: DIRT. The engine, called Neon, is exclusively designed for next-gen platforms (besides the Wii), and took them over a year and half to complete. Gavin Cheshire, Vice President of Codemasters said,
“Neon delivers an engine that provides us with so much more scope and possibilities than an update of existing tech would have ever allowed. The most obvious result is in the visual detail and physics that produce incredible particle effects. Neon makes it possible to go into seemingly minute detail but will create the most realistic and involving environments in the racing genre.”
To give an example of detail, the engine calculates the wind speed and direction, to give an accurate effect on car exhaust, rain, and dust. The game is scheduled for release in Q2 2007, on PC, Xbox360 and PlayStation 3. Check out some stunning screenshots (Xbox360 version) after the jump.
