According to MSN.com, despite the large demand for both the PS3 and the Wii, the Xbox 360 has actually outsold the two newcomers in the time since their launch. Even though gamers everywhere flocked to line up for the PS3 and Wii, the Xbox 360 juggernaut Gears of War plus cheap packages boosted its sales above the competition. The article refers to Canada, but the numbers are true for all of North America.
A Electronics Manager at Great Canadian Superstore said this about the launch,
“Retailers had a great four-day run and pretty much everything is gone. Sony dropped the ball and Nintendo didn’t do that much better. They over-promised and under delivered in terms of the quantity of Wii systems that were available. Sony on the other hand warned everyone that supplies would be severely limited. Microsoft was the big winner. They had lots of systems and they had them priced right with game bundles that gamers were interested in.”
The launch of the PS3 and Wii was a great tactical win for Microsoft, but the real race starts in a few months, when Sony and Nintendo start shipping a lot more consoles.

1This is obviously because Microsoft has virtually unlimited consoles available at the moment. If the case were the same for all 3, it would be a different story.

2No kidding, I mean it’s not like they outsold the other two on luanch day, or even weekend.

3Bullshit! I don’t believe this mess. Isn’t MSN owned by Mircrosoft. I need more proof from another source than MSN. You mean to tell me that the 360 outsold both the Wii and the PS3 in sheer numbers since the new console’s launch.
Sorry I just find that hard 2 believe since there is still more time until X-mas b4 people start getting desperate and buy the plan B system. Before this month the 360 has been lying around stores. There was like no need 2 get one after the launch. Now what we should do is compare the launch numbers of the 360 compared to the numbers of PS3 and Wii.

4I’m going to try and dig those numbers up as well … but only because I am afraid I have to take the opposing view for now. As far as I remember there was definitely a greater number of 360s available at launch than there were PS3s this year. Now the Wii I am not certain but from some of the other sources I have seen they actually didn’t ship as many as they had hoped to. But like I said I will do some research and if I am incorrect in my theory then no problem. It will just be nice to get to the bottom of this.

5OK, let’s assume that the Nintendo sold 500,000 units. This is not an unreasonable estimate is it? I’m only using Nintendo as an example because they seem to have shipped more units. Now, the Xbox 360 is a system who I have heard has sold around 7 million units over the course of 12 months.
Are they trying to tell me that over half a million 360s were sold in less than one week? I very highly doubt this.

6Here are the facts:
“Analysts estimate Xbox 360 launch week sales of 400,000 in the US
Illustration
Paul Loughrey 08:36 02/12/2005
Stock shortages significantly hamper potential sales
More than 400,000 Xbox 360s have been sold in the US since the console launched there just one week ago, according to American Technology Research analyst P.J. McNealy.
Numerous US retailers had ceased taking pre-orders for the console weeks, or even months before the November 22nd launch, and massive queues formed outside major stores in preparation for the midnight release. Thousands of customers were forced to leave empty handed as stock rapidly depleted nationwide, though Microsoft has promised the retail channel a weekly re-supply in the run up to Christmas.”
Also:
“The US pre-launch situation has been largely mirrored in the UK, with retailers complaining that initial stock allocations will fall drastically short of consumer demand for the new machine. Pre-order customers have been advised that they may not receive their new console before Christmas, and while Microsoft has remained relatively quiet on official stock figures for the European launch, estimates of around 300,000 are “not far removed from reality” according to MS executive, Chris Lewis.”
“About 326,000 Xbox 360s were sold in the first five days of U.S. sales, according to figures released by the NPD Group.
To put things in perspective, the original Xbox sold 550,000 consoles in its first week and the PSP sold 602,000 in its first week. ”
“US buys 400,000 Xbox 360s in one week
Xbox_360_2_29Microsoft sold over 400,000 of its new Xbox 360 console in America in the week since launch. That’s according to an analyst at American Technology Research, who reckons that if there had been no stock shortages, Microsoft could already have sold over 1.5 million.”
Now what is really interesting is how MS was getting bashed and many were certain that Sony and Nintendo would NEVER allow themselves to fall victim to the same fate. Funny what a difference a year makes and the reality of the complexities of launching a new console set in.

7Nintendo DID NOT ship 500K units in it’s first week which ends tomorrow. But we will find out some real numbers soon. I had seen some estimate of less than 400K to be honest. However, it is best to wait and see. I seriously doubt that Sony came close to shipping 400K units their first week which ended today (given yesterday stores were closed). I am curious to see the numbers they do post however. Agin mftg problems and system shortages are affecting them the say MS was affected. It is probably true that if 2 million units were available at launch all 2 million would have sold.

8OMG how lousy was my proof-reading?!
“Again manufacturing problems and system shortages are affecting them the way MS was affected.”
Ah much better. Now I will agree that there is no way the 360 sold 500K plus unit during the week other consoles were available … no matter how popular Gears has been proven to be.
Wii and PS3 combined sales for the U.S. must have been somewhere around 650K-750K, so again I can’t see MS beating those combined numbers during that week. If it did indeed happen … which we’ll know for certain in a month or two after all the numbers have been tallied … then I am completely BLOWN away by the allure of Gears which would be the only logical reason so many would have sold in that time period.

9More “concrete” info on launch numbers from an article released on the Firing Squad on Wed. I thought I had sent this in but maybe not.
“» Only 125,000 PS3s Shipped For Launch?
This Biz.GameDaily story reports on a new study by PJ McNealy of American Technology Research who states that Sony may have only shipped between 125,000 to 175,000 Playstation 3 consoles for its US launch last Friday, far less than the official Sony number of 400,000 consoles. Those figures include the 15,000 PS3 consoles that were shipped as demo kiosk units to retailers. Numbers for the Nintendo Wii were between 425,000 and 475,000 units for their US launch according to McNealy.”
Again I’ll keep digging and see what, if anything, more I can come up with.

14Well until the actual numbers come out no one will know for certain no matter how incredulous it may sound. Gears is really a huge machine and we honestly don’t know how many of those million copies it has sold thus far are for new systems an how many are for existing systems. Remember, as popular as Gears is there are many people who DO NOT like or play TPS or Tactical shooters (some people don’t play shooters at all). So in this case it would just be prudent to wait for the results before continuing to refute this psuedo analysis.

17Well here is some “Official” news about the Wii. Seems it did damn well and now I wonder more than ever if MS is just full of BS … I will definitely need to see some real numbers from them now.
“Nintendo Officially Sells 600,000 Wii Units In First Week
Nintendo has sent out a press release announcing that their new Wii game console has sold 600,000 units in its first week in North America. In addition, sales of its flagship game, Legend of Zelde: Twilight Princess, have registered over 454,000 copies sold in the US in the first week.”
So if this is true then MS had to sell over 750,000 consoles in order to beat back both Nintendo and Sony. I really do find it hard to believe that the 360 could sell that many in one week considering it isn’t new.

19“Sorry I just find that hard 2 believe since there is still more time until X-mas b4 people start getting desperate and buy the plan B system.”
That’s because XBoX 360 isn’t the ‘plan B’ system NIMROD. Last year there were MASSIVE 360 shortages all through the holiday season. This year though..MIcrosoft has the shelves fully stocked. Some people have waited to purchase their 360 (or receive one as a gift) until NOW. Don’t you get it?
My little brother for example…he’s in college, has no money, but is asking for a 360 for Christmas. He asked for one last year…but oddly enough my parents didn’t pay $1500 for one on Ebay.
Oh and by the way..I just picked up the HD-DVD drive for my 360…..AWESOME. Tim Burton’s ‘Corpse Bride’ looks absolutely stellar on my TV. And the HD-DVD drive comes with a free copy of King Kong in HD, and a pretty nice universal remote. It lights up and everything.

Says who? People aren’t getting 360’s as a backup. They’re getting 360’s because they want 360’s. They’re the same people who WOULD’VE got 360’s last year if they weren’t sold out coast to coast.

23You honestly think the average consumer buys MULTIPLE game console systems? Please. People own multiple consoles are in the minority. I think some people will buy the Wii as a novelty secondary console…but only the extreme minority of gamers will own PS3 and Xbox360.
Also..the #1 reason 360 sales are doing so good is because last year there were none on the shelves. Well guess what…this year the shelves are stocked.

24yeah there on shelves while no competition is there! what do ya think is gonna happen lol pluss its the holiday season so if im sure alot of kids will be pissed if they get “No” console to play . I still think most has to do with the Amazon sale I mean $100 for a 360 anyone would be dumb not to jump on that if they had the money. 360 has the most games out right now ,is in stores for the holidays so they are in the right place at the right time.

25Amazon ONLY SOLD 3000 units at that price then the promo ended 26 secs after it started, because they were sold out. 3000 units not affect these sales figures… fanboys, get your facts right.
