Most people seem to miss the point of this video. It was done to just see if it could be done. I bet if it ran as smooth as it does on a PC people would be riding this bandwagon all the way down the road.

Windows XP on a PS3? While it sounds cool, I highly doubt that it can be of any practical use. Of course, this would be to the whole issue of programming for the Cell CPU in the PS3. If someone (hacker, geek, company or otherwise) would develop a real emulator which would run XP or Vista comfortably (why should I buy a PS3 or a PC, when my Mac runs everything I want? – and NO, I do not own a mac, it’s just my point, though)…THEN I could see Sony’s line about the PS3 being “an all in one home theater experience”.

After all, what’s the big deal if it would boot up, but cannot run Halo or my Outlook apps?

I’ll admit this much, though – these guys are on to something…

I think they should have an x86 emulator that runs on one of the PS3’s cores. Basically 1 of the cores would translate the instructions from x86 to PPC, and the other cores would process the PPC instructions accordingly..

Not sure how much of a pain it would be to write, but it would be very awesome to see.

But is the hacker community large enough to compensate for the costs of the PS3 and the money they are losing? That is the big question. And again how will Sony react to the Hacker community. Now if you are just talking about tech savvy “geeks” and not real Hackers then okay … but true hackers getting any support from Sony is going to be a tough sale.

This is always a possibility as are many things in life … but its the probability factor that I pay close attention to. What company is going to take the time to develop anything worth buying for the Linux side of the PS3 when they still need to work on getting a fuller grasp on developing for the cell cpu? Are we going to rely on the hacker/modder community to come up with something truly worth a second look … is Sony going to encourage that? How many casual gamers and people who bought the PS3 as a cheap blu-ray playerare going to give this a chance or for that matter give a damn about this? Lots of questions that must be addressed before this is even worthy of any real attention.

I agree, I have my PC to run windows XP. However, some people find it cool and it could lead to better things down the way.

Big deal … it’s not really usable from a gaming standpoint (show me F.E.A.R. or HL2 running smoothly and with all the graphic eye candy turned on on this thing and maybe I will give it some small kudos) and this is an old OS that is basically on its way out the door … when and if it runs Vista wake me and I’ll let you know how impressed I am. This isn’t going to drive any substantial sales of the PS3 so the bottom line is it is useless to Sony.
