First images of AMD’s (and ATI’s) DirectX 10 graphics chip, the R600, have emerged. The graphics card is scheduled for release early 2007, and will go head to head with Nvidia’s recently released 8800 series, battling for the new DX10 market. The chip itself is about 20% larger than the previous version, and is rotated 45 degrees to make room for additional components. AMD will officially reveal details about the new chip on January 20 2007. Until then, Nvidia has the only DX10 cards on the market. More pics here.

1Finally … now the real war of the GPUs begins and this does indeed bode well for PC gamers everywhere. As always more competition leads to real breakthroughs and lower prices … hopefully we’ll see meaningful mid range GPU solutions later in 2007 so the prices can more quickly reach a price point which allows many gamers … from Hardcore to your new PC gaming enthusiasts to partake in the advances to gaming only DX10 enabled cards can deliver.

3This thing wont go head to head with the 8800’s, not at all.. I’d be comparing it to 8900’s instead. For starters, from what I’ve read this thing will have 1GB of 512bit DDR4 ram running at 2Ghz effective, that’s insanely fast. And to think that DX10 gives up to 8 times the performance of DX9.. this baby should last years with DX10 games.

4It’s a slow slim market and very few people will be willing to part with Windows XP for a Vista system that runs games much slower. As it is right now stepping up to DX-10 gaming seems to be even more expensive than the PCI-Express jump that really hasn’t delivered on all it’s promises yet either. Capabilities and Actualities are two separate things in the world of computers. Very few people in the world can afford to completely change out their systems the meager benefits every year at this rate. So for me push comes to shove and it back to the real world of life and enjoying the simple things instead of wrapping myself up in a technology cacoon for my entertainment!
