A poster on the NeoGAF forums claims that the PS3 launch title Resistance Fall of Man only uses around 4,7 GB of disk space, not the 22 GB as Sony and developer Insomniac previously said. Sony marketed Resistance FoM as a proof of why Blu-ray and its massive storage capacity was needed “for next-gen games”. According to NeoGAF forum member squatingyeti, the remaining 17 GB is used for padding, something that’s usually done to push the data to the outer edges of the physical disk, where the spin is faster than than at the center. This results in noticeably faster load times.
However, Sony has always stated that Blu-ray has a constant read over the entire disc. If the rumor turns out to be true, then 17 GB are either used as a marketing tool for Blu-ray, or the Blu-ray disc simply have a constant read.
If one simply takes a look at Resistance, it doesn’t look better than Gears of War, nor does it use larger textures or features bigger environments. The game itself isn’t longer than any other Xbox360 or PC game either, so it’s highly unlikely that it uses a massive 22 GB of data.
