The official numbers for the Wii’s first week on shelves are in. The result? Over 600,000 Wiis sold and, including other hardware, $190 million in Nintendo’s pocket. The Wii’s numbers are certainly impressive, as the number sold doubled the Xbox 360s 300,000 sold in the first week.
Nintendo President Reggie Fils-Aime had this to say about the launch,
“Even with sales already in excess of 600,000 units, demand continues to exceed supply, as it’s clear this is one of the ‘gotta-have’ products for the holiday season. We’ve shipped retailers several times the amount of hardware the other company was able to deliver for its launch around the same time — and we still sold out. Given the inclusive nature of Wii game play, we’re seeing this new form of video gaming is already a huge hit with gamers and newcomers alike. It continues to be a phenomenal launch.”
Nintendo has promised 200,000 Wii consoles to North America each week this year, and over 2 million worldwide in 2006. The best selling Wii title is The Legend of Zelda: The Twilight Princess, selling over 450,000 copies during the same week.

1I love hearing news like this. It silences all the naysayers … at least for the moment. I wonder how Sony feels to be in last place for the first time in a while. It is just great to see that arrogant company get some instant Karma.

3“I can imagine the numbers being quite different (and higher) if both Sony and Nintendo had a lot of units available at launch.”
Perhaps … but we are dealing in actualities and not “ifs” and in this case Sony just flat out BLEW it. I can also imagine Sony doing better if they would have spent time doing more research on what people actually have (1080i HDTVs i.e.) and if they would have had a better plan for their blu-ray strategy.

4The Zelda number are indeed impressive. Surpricingly enough, Zelda were not at the #1 spot on amazon.com. Rayman were. Zelda only came #4 there. I think that is a good sign for Nintendo, since they have tried so hard to get 3 party support for the Wii. But no doubt that Zelda is the biggest hit overall at the moment. Cant wait to see the final hardware and software numbers for november in the US and the japanese launch in about a week

5Ruin3d makes a good point that about the cost, and after looking at the numbers its crazy, and seeing how meny units are up on ebay for sale, is sickning, and for the amount of units that were shiped that is crazy, the wii ont other hand had only roughly 1000 units more on ebay, however there are far more units out there, i dont know how meny exactly are up on ebay, now not only do you need a second morgage, and and for those doing papers about 5 years, of tossing the daily news. i know it sounds crazy but there are bugs in the systems, although i dont know what the wii has for bugs but even still you want to wait untill they have the second update on the system before you buy it, so that they can get all the bugs out, and it is roumord that they will be putting a dvd player in the wii in the up comming months,
