Crytek Might Leave Germany
November 29th, 2006 by Matt Stone in Driving, E3
Following the shooting at a public school last week, where a former student (and supposedly a Counter-Strike player) walked in and shot several children, the German government is looking to ban violent shooters, titles like Half Life and Crysis. German developer Crytek (Far Cry, Crysis) spoke about the issue in an interview, where CEO Cevat Yerli said if the new law was passed, Crytek would leave Germany. Currently the developer employs some 130 people, most of them working on Crysis.

its as if shootings based on games happens every day to them.

it’s not the games that make the kids or adults violent. They are violent to start with and the games only aid to warp they’re already warped minds.

Bah! Stop blaming videogames! What about movies? Rap lyrics? BAD PARENTING?
November 30th, 2006 at 2:25 am
and alcohol, and kids thinking they’re cool if they drink.

Yeah alcahol lowers your awareness with what’s happening in the real world and lets your mind kinda make up your status. Don’t know if most shootings are from drunk people though.

Hard rock/Heavy Metal and Underground Nazi/hate rock lyrics should also be included in the mix if you are going to name rap lyrics. Let’s not just single out the “black influence” alone please. And also add to that list Television. And if you are going to include alcohol you need to realize that alot of todays youth are dropping various forms of XTC or ‘E’ as well as crystal meth. So really there are so many reasons it is just not funny in the least but really really tragic.

Woah woah woah! I only named rap lryics because rap is a a lot more mainstream than other genres. I didn’t mean to single out anything, just named some mainstream influences off the top of my head.
And I agree with the television and Drugs. The latter having a large influence over how people percieve reality and it’s values of right and wrong.
It’s unfair for a government to blame videogames alone when there is obviously other facets of society which could have contributed to the altered mindsets of people.

I just wanted to make sure no one got the wrong impression Zac. It’s cool man … I’m sure you didn’t meant anything sinister.
I agree with you that there is no way you can single out Video games. Problem is at the moment since so many people don’t actually play video games (compared to the ubiquitous nature of song, movies, and tv) that is has become the scape goat of choice. Remember when the scapegoat was rap music just a few years ago when Tipper Gore was on the attack and particpants of the Million Man March also objected to it? Now we celebrate it just about every facet of our American culture. It has become so prevelant (hence supporting your reason that it just came to you first) that they just everyone has basically said “If you can’t beat ‘em make billions of dollars by jumping on the bandwagon”. Until the VG segement gets even larger you won’t see that attitude.
In any society there has to be a scapegoat since a great number of parents are loathe to take any real responsibility for their childrens’ actions and people feel the need to always be at odds and outraged by something in our society.

I dont blame this violence on games or anything, but if there is evidence that someone who goes killing people is a substantial counter strike player, for example, then that needs to be considered. These games probably CAN inspire violence if they are not seen in their correct perspective by the gamer. Too much immersion in the game and not enough reality could really damage someones psyche. Parents need to keep that in check I guess. After a few hours of watching 24, I have been known to have awesome Jack Bauer dreams where I run around killing people and saving people and doing everything Jack does. So it does imprint itself on your mind.
It has also been shown recently by scientists monitoring the brain that after playing violent games, there is an increase in activity in the brain in areas like agressiveness and hyperactivity and a decrease in self awareness and control. This has to be considered. Games CAN influence people, so can lots of other things. Games are not to blame, but the acceptance of violence is quite extreme these days. I played FEAR recently and really liked it, then I saw some videos of it on youtube with titles like “me killing in awesome ways” and stuff. It suddenly looked a bit wrong, too much violence or something, just in the way that the gamers don’t seem to realise its violent anymore … we have become desensitized to it all.

Haha.
Yeah that makes sence Anuban. When videogames are totally mainstream, they’ll be fully accepted and won’t be the target of all this.
And I agree with you Pinksteady. Though I think that a person would probably have to be unstable in the first place to let videogames actually influence them to kill in real life.

My moms dick head bf hates games and no reason saying theyre to volient.but how? Yes a game u kill alot but i know in my mind one it looks fake the other it s fake period. When he bitches about well bitched im on my own now he would watch movies like and he acted/ was a key grip for movies like good fellas, anazly this,/that,basic,the punisher, warriors and many more.I hate when ppl always blames games.like i read before what bout tv? tv give u ideas and ppl always use shit to get out of trouble.Im in the army and that is completely different.Yeah here and there ull have a gamer that cant take rl to fanasty so we have to kick his ass making him realize u cant walk aroudn killing ppl. This is sad u know? how ppl have nothing better to with to much time on their hands to actually go to court over this. The only thing i can agree with is that yes theyre to detailed for ppl 5-12 but thats the parents job.U know?THe parent that buys the game should know what theyre doing at all time.I wouldnt like my son play cs or bf till he is like 13.

but if a young child plays a killing game and are repeatedly told it isn’t real so they can’t copy it wouldn’t it be slightly safer becuase they are learning? i have a young brother and he likes to play shooting games(halo), thankfully he knows its not real and doesn’t reinact anything violent.

Not even all games are voilent.
But yes, it’s about the parents. They must be there to TEACH a kid what’s right and wrong and what’s real and fake that shouldn’t be reinacted. A lot of the time parents give kids a game without a second thought just to keep them happy.
