DS Kicks PSP’s Ass In Japan
December 10th, 2006 Posted in Business, Hardware, Nintendo DS, Portable
According to a survey from Famitsu, the Nintendo DS has pretty much tramped over the PSP in 2006 in Japan. The DS and DS Lite sold an impressive 7,5 million units so far this year, while the PSP managed to sell 1,6 million units. On the software side, DS games sold over 27 million copies this year, compared to only 2,8 million PSP games. The difference is smaller in the US and Europe, but the DS still remains on top by a good margin.

I cant but wonder if this is the same picture we’re gonna see in a couple of years with the Wii outselling the PS3 by a 10-1 margin

I’m looking forward to seeing Doom’s reply too.
I have both a DS and a PSP and play both in about equal measures, but you can’t deny the fact that the PSP really is taking a kicking sales-wise.
I’ve never been one to care about sales personally though – I was more interested in the Saturn than the Playstation after all, but when it gets to the point where sales are so low that games developers begin to withdraw support, that’s bad as it’s the beginning of a vicious circle – hopefully PSP sales will pick up enough to avoid that.

Yeah, yeah, the DS kicks the PSP’s butt in Japan.. yaddah, yaddah. Will someone please explain to me the significance in reporting sales figures from Japan!! How come we never get sales figures from the US?!!

the DS is kicking ass yes sir but people fail to think about one thing Sony did damn well with the Psp and the thought of them even selling as many as they did and to have the balls to step in Nintendos world and do better than the others like the Game Gear , N-gage and any others that failed . I see it as a pluss lol hell the others strugled to reach 8 million units the psp 17 million DS 25 million via wikipedia thats not bad take a look at how many gameboys ,gameboy advance , micros , gamboy colors and compare those numbers to now which shows that even though they are gettin they a** kicked they still cut into Nintendos portable market

thats just a round off though because some numbers are not updated like the 360 sales have jumped up the Wii and Ps3 too.

Well Japan is the home of video gaming…

” Well Japan is the home of video gaming… ”
perhaps so. but obviously a console brand doesn’t have to be successful in Japan in order to be considered a contender in the gaming market. Look at the 360.

thats a nice point Keil Joy you are right about that

true, Keil Joy. I’d like to see some US sales charts too. what do i care what sells in Japan if it doesn’t affect the market here?

Nintendo had 55% of the US market for November. The Ds lite sold more than 900.000 units in november. PS2 some 600.000, and x-box 360 500.000. The PSP are not doing so well, but I cant remember how much it sold. Gameboy advance came in #3 also selling 600.000 units. But clearly the DS is the #1 selling machine in the US too

ok, Kaiser. but according to what source?
December 13th, 2006 at 5:01 pm
I think I saw the numbers on http://www.gonintendo.com a few days ago, not sure where I saw it, but pretty sure about the numbers though

@Kaiser Soze
Oh man.. you quote a site in order to show us ‘reliable’ figures.. in which the full domain name is 2 characters away of the product? Hell of a way to draw a good comparisson wahhahaha!
Oooh man kaiser, you never fail to amuse the crowds.
And please, stop using that name. Using that name doesnt make you boldheaded and cool like kevin spacey. I think it’s an insult to his career that you as a 12 year old snotty nintendo playing goofball refer to one of his roles. I think he’d cry silently if he knew this.
In time you will see the wrongness of your nerdy ways kaiser, in time..

The ds lite and the psp are both good systems if you ask me. I have a ds lite and a psp. I dont see the big deal of which is better though. The psp can play mp3s movies and videos. So can the ds. The ds and psp can both go online and play other people worldwide. Some of the features of the ds is that it has a built in microphone and a touch screen, which I think is pretty cool. Another thing is, that if you get tired of that gba you can play those games on the ds. You can even use another person’s ds as a host system for multi-player on the ds if the other player does not have that game. Another cool part is that you can download demos from ebgames or gamestop onto your ds. The psp has a 4 inch screen and a shiny coating. The psp really in my opinion is based on more media than game play because there arent too many good games on the psp. The only thing you can really do on the psp is listen to music or watch movies and videos. I think overall that the ds is my preffered handheld system.
