Nintendo Retracts Wii Shipment Promise

December 11th, 2006 Posted in Articles, Business

Nintendo has retracted a statement made by company president Reggie Fils-Aime, who said that Nintendo would be shipping one million units to the United States by the end of the year. It’s not uncommon for company executives to misfire on their estimates of units which will be shipped within the launch window, both Sony and Microsoft were wrong with their shipment estimates when the PS3 and Xbox 360 launched. Nintendo announced last month that 600,000 consoles were sold in North America, and that another 4 million would be shipped worldwide in 2006.

I’m a bit surprised by this, I really thought Nintendo could make enough consoles for everyone. The Wii is very simeple to make, and the hardware parts are all available since it’s an upgrade from GameCube (please don’t start a massive discussion on GC vs Wii hardware now, just pointing out that Nintendo should be able to make a lot of Wiis)

Perhaps it’s the Wii-motes there is the problem?

The Wii is just wildly popular right now … that’s why I am still waiting patiently for mine. What are you gonna do … thankfully I have a 360 and a decent PC to keep my gaming needs satiated.
