CPL Reveals Future FPS Plans

December 18th, 2006 Posted in Business

Angel Munoz, the current head of the Cyberathlete Professional League, is finally revealing plans for a multi-player FPS that will be developed specifically for competition in the CPLs PC and Console team based and 1v1 player competitions. The game, which has been titled Severity, will be developed using id Software’s Doom 3 engine. The most recent use of the aging but still powerful engine can be found in the popular FPS Prey, and the upcoming title Enemy Territory: Quake Wars.

Tom Mustaine, the former VP at Ritual Entertainment will be leading the charge along with the CPLs own internal game development studio. Testing of this new IP is slated to begin no later than the end of 2007 and the game is said to offer such things as enhanced tournament support and spectator modes. It is surprising that the CPL has not chosen to use the much lauded UE3 for their new title; however given the costs of a Unreal Engine 3 license, it is not altogether surprising that an alternative engine was deemed necessary.

It’ll be interesting to see what sort of things they will focus on, considering it a game for pro gamers.

And that Ritual guy leading the charge? wasn’t he the one resposible for the cancellation of SiN Episodes? It’s probably for the better, since it sucked anyway.
