This bit of news should not come as a shock to anyone who has been following the race between Zelda: Twilight Princess and Gears of Wars. The choice for Game of the Year for 2006 on the vast majority of gaming news sites always seems to come down to these two very impressive and very different games with the overwhelming majority of gaming sites giving Zelda the nod for the title. However, anyone who has been following the controversy over at GameSpot, where Zelda received a 8.8 score and Gears received a hearty 9.6 (from the same reviewer), could have guessed where GameSpot’s Loyalties lay (lies?).
Of course here at DigitalBattle the topic received a healthy amount of comments, some of which were pretty insightful. In the end GameSpot just could not help themselves and so based on their own scoring methodology they had no choice but to award GoTY to Epic’s fantastic looking third person shooter. Of course Gears also picked up GameSpot’s top honors for the following:
Best Graphics: Technical, Best New Characters (Delta Squad), Best Multiplayer Game, Best Shooter, Best Xbox 360 Game
Is it any wonder this is one of Epic’s favorite news reporting sites? I think not. At any rate a lukewarm congratulations goes out to Gears of War for being GameSpot’s choice for Game of the Year; even though they got it wrong. I am fairly confident just about everyone else knows that the title should have gone to Zelda:TP, including the editors here at DigitalBattle who did pick Zelda as the best game for 2006 (with Gears as runner up), as many commentators were quick to agree with. 1Gears is a great game, but Zelda has that thing Gears doesn’t, that “feeling”. That’s what makes it GOTY.

2Surprise surprise surprise … now what have I been saying to all of you. Go back to the thread with the reviews about Zelda and you will see I saw this coming a mile away. Bah … it’s not like I even visit that site that much anymore anyway. They must be owned by MS or Epic. What a load of … well you get my drift. I’ll say no more on this whole Gears thing. Funny thing is that before it was even released I was telling many people that it would win GOTY. But of course that was also before I knew about the power of the Wii and Zelda.

3I think that GOw was accurately portayed by Olivier Dauba: “In my opinion if you play ten minutes of Gears of War it’s an absolutely awesome ten minutes, but if you play 20 minutes it doesn’t bring anything new.”
Twilight princess feels new every step of the way.

7Wow. Such an unbiased reporting of factual information. I bow to your overwhelming journalistic credibility.
Funny, last I checked GoW was outselling Zelda 2:1.
In case you were wondering, this site IS in fact, a joke.

8Jake, those number would have been quite different if there were wnough Wii consoles out there, say, 7-8 million like Xbox 360?
Gears wouldn’t have sold any better than Zelda did if it was released a year ago, when the 360 launched.

9I doubt that Jake is intelligent enough to digest what you have said. If he checked his facts he would know that according to gamerankings.com Zelda is rated above Gears and again THE MAJORITY OF GAMING RELATED SITES have also given Zelda the nod over Gears. Try living in the real world Jake before you go spouting off such utter nonsense. I don’t recall anyone asking you to be a part of this site or to read any of the articles that have been posted. Perhaps it IS in fact you who are the joke.

10Let me add this which I just read on the FiringSquad:
Next Generation and GameSpot both picked Epic and Microsoft’s Xbox 360 shooter Gears of War as the best game of 2006.
GameSpy and GamesRadar give the top prize to Nintendo’s Wii version of Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess.
So there are TWO sites that have picked Gears and including this site (which is no joke let me assure you Jake of that) THREE for Zelda so far and also Spike TV awarded Oblivion (NOT Gears) with GOTY. So we must not be the only site suffering from what you believe to be “journalistic credibility”.
I admit I thought only GS would give Gears GOTY but I will keep my eyes peeled and let you and any other people who question this sites choice about the ones from Game Informer, IGN, 1UP and some more of the better known gaming sites around. Maybe I will also be wrong about how many places choose Gears in the end but it really is important (to me at least) that you see that what you said was really out of line and you were DEAD WRONG.

11Just wanted to inform people that GameDaily has recently held their Nod Awards 2006 and it surprised me to see that even they gave GOTY to Gears of Wars. Yep and that is a site I definitely like and respect so I have nothing to say to that but WOW! Anyway Zelda was the runner-up of course but what surprised me the most was that Guitar Hero II was also the runner-up tying with Zelda. You may be interested to know that GD gave Gears a 4.5/5 or 90% and also gave Zelda a 9/10 (90%) for their reviews but actually GHII got a perfect 5/5 when it was reviewed. Of course I have heard the argument about different reviewers and all but still if a site backs a 100% for a game then don’t you think that game should be the site’s GOTY? I know I do so really it didn’t make sense to me. The Zelda thing was a close one though … who knows how they really decided or if Epic/MS had anything to do with it.

12Forgot to add that GameDaily (again a very credible site) also gave Gears these other awards:
Best Online Multiplayer, Best Guilty Pleasure (multiplayer), Best Should-Be-a-Movie Storyline, Best OMG That Looks Hot! Game, and Best Creepy Game.
Do people agree with Gears getting all of these awards .. I can see the Best Looks thing … but Movie and Creepy game … ahhh I am not so sure about that. But feel free to give your opinions on the matter.

13Ya im sorry but if u think zelda TP deserves the game of the year award you are totally wrong gears of war deserved it not zelda because with zelda ur always getting the same thing ooo save the princess ooo. with gears u can have a great online battle and it has a GREAT campaign to it so dont go saying a game that got an 8.8 deserves to get the award because it doesnt!

14I’ll say it … but it is just my opinion just as you have yours … no one is wrong in this case … we just disagree on this … GOTY is always going to be pretty much a subjective thing anyway. And if you look at the overall ranking on gamerankings.com you will find that Zelda is a higher rated game. You can’t go by one site (who has an obvious bias) you have to tally up all the reviews. If that were the case gamerankings wouldn’t exist.
In any case as stated before some sites are giving the GOTY to Zelda and some to Gears … I haven’t noticed a clear winnner emerging. Probably they will end up with around the same number of GOTY awards. We will just have to wait and see.

15yeah well, Zelda is still an amazing game. I personally think that it deserved the title, but the numbers are clear, and no one can argue that Gears Of War was outvoted by The Legend Of Zelda:Twilight Princess.
