Some lads managed to get a Wii running in a movie theater, using a 370 inch screen and custom made sensor bar. As on might expect, it’s a lot of fun playing Wii Sports (what else?).

Lucky bastards, now imagine that with 1080p and Dolby DTS? The ultimate console :)

Since it is not Hi-def though I do wonder how good the Wii games would look on a 1080p TV … I don’t think it would be any different than a 1080i/720p HDTV tbh since it doesn’t do HD gaming … but if I am wrong please correct me so I have even more to look forward to once I eventually get mine.

They look fine. Wii Sports is fun.

  4. Anuban Says:

Okay I get they look fine but again my question is would there be a difference between how it looks on a 1080i/720p vs 1080p HDTV?

That depends on how much you notice differences between resolutions. Here is the comparisons between them:

    720p is constantly 1280×720 pixels.
1080i is constantly 1920×540 pixels, interlacing makes this effectively seem like 1920×1080.
    1080p is constantly 1920×1080 pixels.

Since the Wii doesn’t do hi-def how does this really impact the visuals I will see on the screen? Are you saying that irregardless of this fact the Wii games will still look better on a 1080p HDTV? I thought that if the game system and the games weren’t made for that resolution that you really couldn’t see any difference between that and the 480p the Wii displays at. This is where I am a bit confused.

  7. NRG753 Says:

Ah I see what you mean, yeah unless the TV does some advanced upscaling, which still wouldnt look as good as a true HD signal, you couldnt get your Wii to look any better on a TV that does more than 480p/576i.

  8. Anuban Says:

Okay … just as I thought. Thanks for the clarification.

  9. Jim2k Says:

I meant if the Wii supported 1080p, not just upscaling it.

  10. Anuban Says:

Well that is a big “if” … too bad at the current time it doesn’t and more than likely won’t see that is not Nintendo’s focus. Get a 360 for that. Wii60 combo forever! :)

  11. Jim2k Says:

    Well, Anuban, I said “imagine”.

Like, IMAGINE a Wii with the Xbox 360 graphics chip, Cell processor and 1080p in a movie theater. The ultimate console. For now.

  12. Anuban Says:

That you did Jim2K .. that you did. I wasn’t trying to pick apart what you were saying … I was just trying to understand your POV. Now you have made it crystal clear so thanks.

I think Nintendo likes to prove that graphics aren’t everything, it’s more about the gameplay and price of the console.

  14. Zac Says:

Yeah I think that too. But the graphics are always good anyway, they just arn’t the best, not a primary focus of efforts.

  15. Anuban Says:

Well they have certainly proven that so far. Let’s hope they can keep it up after another year of the 360 and better games as the devs continue to master the dev environment … and of course the PS3 with its powerful cell processor that once the devs get the hang of taking full advantage of that thing everyone may just have to move aside. We’ll have to wait and see if that begins to happen late in 2007. There is still time for the PS3 to prove itself … but past 2007 I doubt anyone but the diehard Sony fanboys will care.

Ok, my first thought was “WHY IS THE CINEMA SO CRAPPY LOOKING?”. I live in a small crappy town in Sweden, waaay from the big cities. And ours is like ten times as luxury as that one. I would rather watch a movie at home if I had to choose between that cinema and my own TV.

Ok second thought, “THAT LOOKS PRETTY AWESOME”. :)

  17. NRG753 Says:

I actually prefer to watch movies on my PC over a cinema, I may not have as big of a screen, but I’m sitting closer to it, my sound system is better than a cinemas (mostly because it’s closer as well), I can pause the movie any time for any reason, and I can get however much snacks I desire :D . The only big problem with it is that you have to wait until it comes out on disc to watch it, so I still watch a lot of movies at the cinemas. If I miss a good one, I’ll often end up watching it on my PC.

But yeah, I live in a small crappy town in Australia, but we have very good cinemas.
