Valve’s newest game, The Crossing, is “fusing singlepalyer with multiplayer”. The game looks great, despite using the rather dated Source engine. It’s developed by the team behind Dark Messiah of Might and Magic, which was also powered by the Source engine, but failed to impress gamers.

Same sucky boring all concrete levels as HL2. Looks Zzzz!

Is it me or is ever game made with the Source engine just look and feel like Half Life 2? SiN Episodes certainly did.

  3. Anuban Says:

Nope it’s not just you Jim2K … Valve needs to upgrade that Source engine and people need to be more artistic when developing games using that engine.

  4. Zac Says:

I think it looks fine. The Source Engine is pretty realistic. The reason it might look the same is because it’s in a city like location.

  5. Anuban Says:

The Monolith engine is more realistic in my opinion for that type of game. But I suppose the Source engine is holding up decently considering it is going on 2 years old.

  6. Zac Says:

Which game uses the Monolith Engine?

  7. Anuban Says:

F.E.A.R. (and the Expansion Game) and Condemned so far.

I think that is a compliment (?) so thanks … glad you took the time to learn a bit about the Unreal Editor and made some levels in UT2K4 (hopefully they are playable so upload them somewhere and give me a link) which will come in handy when you decide to mod … I can always use Level developers when I start work on my mod for UT2K7 which I am still in the process of putting on paper first.

I always thought HL2 looked better than FEAR. From what I saw of FEAR anyway..

  12. Anuban Says:

Well we can just agree to disagree on that point. I don’t know what setting you saw F.E.A.R. on though … me I run it at 1600×1200, 4xAA or no AA with soft shadows turned on (looks the most realistic but is a resource hog), 8-16xAF (depending on if I want a bit better frames or not) and everything else on maximum. When I max out HL2 it just doesn’t look nearly as good imho. Especially the lighting in dark areas, the character models and the textures. I do think that the animations (especially the facial ones) are a bit better in HL2 and of course the outdoor environments look better I will concede that.

  13. Zac Says:

Ah. Yeah I havn’t seen much of FEAR, what I saw was inside buildings and a bit of outdoor in an industrial area. HL 2 has some nice little details to it, and things look generally pretty good until you zoom in. I personally like the character models in HL2 more, they seem somehow more realistic, but yeah, I also havn’t seen much of FEAR, so my judgements are vague.
