PS3 And Wii Doing Well In Japan
December 27th, 2006 by Rajiv Ashrafi in Articles, Business
Christmas is a good time for Nintendo and Sony in Japan, as the companies are having their second-best week following their console launches last month. As expected, Nintendo is the leader in the next-gen console race in the region: Wii has sold 108, 237 units in the last week; the PS3, in comparison, has sold about 71,000 units. Last place is obviously no surprise: the Xbox 360 comes in a distant third at just 17,000 units. According to Media Create, the Wii has sold 543,000 units in Japan since since launch, while the PS3 has sold 306,000.
On the software side, Nintendo leads by leaps and bounds. Wii Sports and Pokemon: Battle Revolution dominated the charts, selling 69,000 and 67,000 copies, respectively. The best-selling PS3 title ranked in at a lowly number 35 in the chart, which was mostly represented by Wii, DS and PS2 titles.

This doesn’t come as a surprise to anyone I would think as the article says. But damn … I really expected the to sell more than 17,000 units. I guess MS should really just focus on EVERY market but the Japanese market. Even with a full year head start they just can’t break into that arena.

Wow! I knew that Gears had pushed some sales for the 360 in Japan, but obviously one killer title couldn’t keep it from sinking. As for the PS3, Sony seems to be doing ok for a next gen console that has only launched about three or four -apparently mediocre- titles. So just imagine how close the race will be between the Wii and the the PS3 once Sony begins dropping killer titles liike MSG4!
