NPD Shoots Down False Console Sale Numbers
NPD is considered by most to be the most reliable source for consumer trends and sales. When reports came out from websites saying they had NPD sale numbers, many considered it to be the truth. These reports, however, were fake. NPD’s David Riley told Gamedaily Biz,
“Recent media reports erroneously cited The NPD Group as having provided to CNBC December ‘06 retail sales for the video game industry. Although the specific CNBC segment included NPD’s November ‘06 console hardware install base sales figures, there were no sales figures or forecasts from NPD for December 2006. NPD’s December/Year-End sales data will become available Jan 11.”
In case you haven’t seen the fake sales figures, CNBC had the Xbox 360 selling 2 million, The Wii selling 1.8 million, and the PS3 selling 750,000. Time will tell if these numbers were right, so check back here on Jan. 11th for the real numbers.

CNBC should know when NPD releases the numbers, I noticed a lot of sites picking up on this (not DigitalBattle, however) and thinking it was fact. Well, it wasn’t.
