Jack Thompson Now Threatens Microsoft
To start off the new year, it appears that everyone’s favorite videogame cynic now goes after Microsoft and Bill Gates. More specifically, the Florida based lawyer has sent out a mass email to many news outlets titled “Bill Gates in the Crosshairs”. It will most likely come as no surprise to you that in this e-mail, Jack Thompson has stated that he will rally against the release of Grand Theft Auto IV for Xbox 360, but doesn’t mention Sony or PS3, despite the fact that GTA4 will be released on the console.
In this e-mail he also calls upon Bill Gates to “please have your lawyers contact me in order that such sales will be prevented”. Bill is probably scared to death right now. Thompson also mentions an Interfaith Center on Corporate Responsibility report, stating that “millions of units of the new Grand Theft Auto game will be sold directly to minors.”
If you’re interested in what Thompson usually writes when he threatens, well, everybody, JackThompson.org provides tons of letters written by the ant-game crusader. Expect a great deal of propaganda.

all assholes are lawyers, just found out today he’s a lawyer and im not surprised. i hate lawyers more than anything, they’re like rats, selfish bastards.

rockstar should make a mission in the game where you can hunt this bastard down.

Well… You got to give it to the guy, Hes lost every case vs. Games, was made fun of in that Nightline, and was called out by Penny-Arcade about not donating money that he said he would. Super man has Lex, Batman has The Joker and Video games has Jack Thompson.
He couldnt get at the game maker (Rockstar) now He’ll fail at the Console makers, Whats next gamestop/EB. Its really there fault that the games get into the hands of kids. I worked at a gamestop YEARS ago and everytime you scan an M rated game it will prompt you to check an ID. Same goes with R rated movies.
Jack you have been shot down by courts so many times…
So what are only Kids suposed to have all the fun when it comes to Video games???
Just give it up!

Not all attorneys are azzholes … some do really good work and help people who are wrongly accused or who are being sued by lousy lawyers and their greedy clients. Like anything there are always good people who are in professions that are overrun with terrible people … especially here in the U.S.A. Just like I hate most cops I know that some are actually good and have had some treat me with respect and dignity and actually cut me some slack.
JT just gives attorneys a bad name … a very bad name I will admit but still that doesn’t make all attorneys JTs. Plus in one sense I would have to agree with him to a point that in America anyway Vid games have helped contribute to our kids being lazy overweight and diabetes type 2 prone youngsters who don’t bother to go outside anymore and do physical activity like we used to back a few decades ago before there were so many consoles around and so many cable stations to choose from. But still he goes about trying to handle the problems caused by PARTLY by the video game age all wrong. Violence is not the issue or enemy here … it is the health of our kids here in the States … we are the most obese industrialized nation on the planet … that is the real problem. But now that the Wii is here maybe consoles and video games can be more of the solution than another addition to the overall problem.

games contributed but nowhere near the extent mcdonalnds or burger king or any other fat encrusted burger shop has.
i guess there are a few good lawyers, but any lawyer that represents a murderer or other bad people and fnids excuses for them is and areshole, imo its most lawyers.

Can’t agree with you on that since sometimes these “murders” or “other bad people” are actually innocent. Again I am talking about America … can’t speak for other places. And when I was growing up I ate lots of junk food … including McDonalds, BK, etc but since there were not really that many good vid games for my fairchild system and even when I had an Atari 2600 there were okay games that were better if you met up with your friends at the arcade, I did a ton of outdoor activities to counterbalance all that “bad” food … which was even worse back then. I remember that after a group of us would play games at an arcarde we would end up playing some basketball or practicing martial arts/street fighting techniques, or go roller skating/biking … something physical instead of just staying inside countless hours playing RPGs, or on XBL, or other MMOGs. This is just a fact.
But if I were against vid games I wouldn’t be getting ready to go back to school to learn more about how to make ones for the future. I know a balance can be struck but we need the right people educating younger people about what that balance should be in order to stay as healthy as possible in this new video game crazed era.

Uhh… Jack Thompson… Bill Gates is scared to death now.
January 4th, 2007 at 10:54 pm
Yeah, uhh leave the “kill Bill” tactics to Steve Jobs.
January 4th, 2007 at 10:55 pm
Jack Thompson still wets his bed.
January 4th, 2007 at 11:12 pm
None of this matters, video games, fast food or Jack Thompson.
It all falls on the PARENTS TO RAISE THEIR KIDS. Find out what your kids are doing in their spare time, find out what they watch on TV.
Stop passing the buck, take responsibility for your children and how you raise them, if you cant….go get snipped or something.

Benji is Right… I’m the one rasing my Kids, Not Jack Thompson! So I know whats best for my kids. If I want them to play an M rated game that I have to accept any consequences that will come from that. Weather it be Nightmares, Fights at school or total rebelion. Its my call NOT HIS.
January 5th, 2007 at 12:16 am
Yeah, but if successfully risen kids turn out like Jack Thompson, maybe we shouldn’t try to do it to the best of our ability?
January 5th, 2007 at 12:25 am
This has to be the most united I have every seen you all on a topic. Though I doubt Mr. Thompson has that many fans…
January 5th, 2007 at 12:26 am
By that I mean no one is backing Jack..
January 5th, 2007 at 12:55 am
benjamin,
you can’t say its the parents fault. there isn’t enough time for most familys to even talk to each other because of workload. i doubt anyone of my friends and other classmates’ parents knew about the content on some of their mobile phones, such as porn. i doubt they would even know about porn on their hard drives. the parents do have ot look after their child well but school seems to be the one doing this and kids just as much as parents, school and society are to ‘blame’, if you want ot put it that way.
back on topic, at least everyone hates jack thompson.
January 5th, 2007 at 1:23 am
All I know is the proof here in American is that our society is more unhealthy than ever and our kids are fatter than ever in this new age of parenting and video games and non required PE classes in schools and kids not getting enough outdoor exercise … and now teens are getting diabetes type 2 … something never before seen except in older adults. And yes we can all agree that JT is pure BS.

Which word is censored in my latest two posts … is it the ‘k’ word?
January 5th, 2007 at 2:35 am
maybe it was PE:P
the diabetes thing is scary, and it has to do a lot with fizzy drinks. i was clsoe to hitting the diabetes curve even though i was as fit as a fiddle, worked out and ate quite decently with the couple a week junk-food added in. but i usually drank near 2 litres of pepsi/dr pepper a day, all teh sugar and lack of water nearly destroyed my kidneys.
i also blame WoW since i would sit there just eating and drinking if i was ever given the time to get something:)

Here is an excerpt from a very interesting article I found on Gamespot:
Study: Activity-based games fight obesity
Mayo Clinic researchers put into perspective the amount of extra calories burned by children playing Dance Dance Revolution or EyeToy games.
It doesn’t take a scientist to figure out that playing a heated game of Dance Dance Revolution will burn more calories than sitting on the couch with a controller in hand. However, Mayo Clinic obesity researcher Lorraine Lanningham-Foster wanted to find out exactly how much more energy dancing games require, and her findings were recently published in the medical journal Pediatrics.
“In this day and time, children really love to play video games,” Lanningham-Foster told GameSpot. “And even though we might want children to be outside and engaged in more traditional children’s play, I don’t think that children are going to abandon video games anytime soon…It’s important to look at it this way because video gaming may potentially be a better way for obesity researchers to develop better interventions for children.”
