Sony Ships 1 Million PS3s To NA

January 9th, 2007 Posted in Articles, Business

ps3side.jpgSony announced that they have shipped 1 million PlayStation 3 consoles to North America during the six week launch window in 2006. Sony didn’t mention how many consoles were sold, but looking at all the available consoles in stores around the US, they certainly haven’t sold a million units.

Sony still promises to ship 6 million in total by March 2007. If there are consoles available now across the US, how many more will there be in a few months time?

In fairness PS3 did totally sell-out. There are consoles in store again because the bottom fell out of the ebay market and the thieving scumbags returned ones they couldn’t sell for silly amounts of money.

I think the PS3 is a bit overpriced but I really hate people who try and sell things for double on ebay just because parents are desperate to make their kids Christmas.

The biggest problem PS3 has is the price. Even if it is the most innovative console ever in the history of everness (and as I own one I know that it bloody well isn’t its very average) £400 is a lot of money for the average person to find. Sony has a good brand name and PS2 was a good start, but for PS3 to become huge it needs to take a major cut in price.

I give the PS3 less than one year to own this so-called next gen war! period.

I have to agree with everone , I think the price of the Ps3 is really the only reason they have Ps3’s in some stores. Also the whole deal with dirtbags who payed for 10 of them had to return them because they couldnt make profit. I also think Sonys weekly or Bi-weekly shipments added up with all of the returns (HAHA) ,so we see alot of Ps3’s on the shelves for consumers. Oh that laugh was for all the jerks that tryed to make money lol . Now the Wii its fun new and Hip, plus cheaper so its clear to why none are in stock . I think if the ps3 was say 300 , the (premium) 360 was 300 and the Wii was 250 there would be way more Wii’s on shelves . I think everyone just dont have the money and are buying a Wii since its the cheapest right now and are waitin to pick up the upgraded 360 or Ps3 when there is a price cut.

Again that is all speculation about the future and this is the present and in the present there is no competition for MS or Nintendo from Sony. I will say it again .. they need to cut the price and show some real games that are just clearly taking advantage of 4-6 cores of the Cell processor … until those things happen expect to continue to see Sony trail behind the BIG TWO.

  5. Anuban Says:

Presently there is no competition coming from Sony … the future has yet to be written and I don’t expect MS or Nintendo to rest on their laurels and let Sony gain any traction. Again I live in the present not the future (though I wish I did at times) and presently Sony is eating Nintendo’s and Microsoft’s dust. It is that simple … denying facts won’t change them.

  6. greenthumb Says:

ok anuban since you did say “I live in the present not the future” I wont hold that against ya lol but I said it before I will say it again ” there are 7 games in the Nba playoffs” Sony might be down 3 games by the two but there are 4 games left. The miami heat were down 3 games to none and won a title Sony has 2 rings in the past and really the numbers distance between the 3 competitors is nothing really spectacular now last gen thats were you say eating dust because Sony laid the smackdown on both of them but this time I dont think any will reach over 100 million sold because all three have what gamers want oh and they are alot more costly then last gen

  7. Anuban Says:

No one is denying that last generation Sony had the jump on everyone and won that war … Period; but in the new next-gen war they are losing pretty badly so far. Now will that change? Maybe but there is nothing to show that it will for certain. So yeah right now Sony is eating their dust. It is what it is. But yeah I agree 100 million actually sold seems out of reach for everyone this time around. Unless there are a tons of bad systems (like with the PS2 … I had to buy three before I got one that worked as it should) and people have to keep replacing them.

  8. Anuban Says:

Here are some FACTS which explain why Sony really won the last generation war … so no more excuses about the 360 shipping just one year earlier. It is winning because it is better even at the current moment … even without a huge library of BC titles … unlike Sony and the PS2 … now you also have to really applaud Nintendo this time around because they released a week later than Sony and are wiping the floor with them:

The GameCube was released on September 14, 2001 in Japan; November 18, 2001 in North America; May 3, 2002 in Europe; and May 17, 2002 in Australia.

PS2 … and it was first released in Japan on March 4, 2000, in North America on October 26, 2000 and in Europe on November 24, 2000.

Yet, the PS2 initially sold well partly on the basis of the strength of the PlayStation brand and its backward compatibility, selling over 900,000 units in the first weekend in Japan. This allowed the PS2 to tap the large install base established by the PlayStation — another major selling point over the competition. Later, Sony gained steam with new development kits for game developers and more PlayStations for consumers.

Xbox – It was first released on November 15, 2001 in North America, February 22, 2002 in Japan, and on March 14, 2002 in Europe.

So you can see Sony had an even bigger lead time than even MS did this time around. Especially in Japan (almost two full years) and Europe.

  9. Anuban Says:

Well again we shall see … if the people with PS2s decide to stick with Sony and pay $600 for a system that has not shown the value of having it over the other two or if they decide to try another one of the consoles … at least in the short run. You would think that Sony has the clear advantage and that even at this point they would be in the lead … but they are NOT and so what is the reason to think they will take the lead in the near future when places are reporting that many PS3s are just sitting around while people are purchasing the other two systems (or upgrading their PCs for that matter)? I am trying to be as objective about this as possible but I am still unlcear as to how Sony can just rocket past the other two in a one (or even two) year time frame without dropping the price and having substantially better games.

  10. Anuban Says:

What lies? It is no lie to say Sony is behind the curve this time around. It is no lie to say the Wii is kicking its butt even though it shipped a week later. It is no lie to say that in the exact same time period the Xbox 360 sales were greater (even if it by a small margin) than the PS3. If you have proof that any of these statements are not true then post that proof.
