MotorStorm Doesn’t Support 1080p
January 11th, 2007 by Matt Stone in Driving
One of the most anticipated PS3 titles, MotorStorm, doesn’t support Sony’s grand promise of “True HD” 1080p mode. In 2006, Sony hailed MotorStorm as one of the titles to support 1080p, but SCEA representatives told 1UP that the game runs at 30fps and only supports 720p. As you may remember, Resistance: Fall of Man ended up in 720p as well, despite promises of 1080p.

Once again these are the types of issues that I am talking about that will cause a slow down in the adoption of the PS3 by gamers. All we heard for months was how ALL of their games would be TRUE HD and that the next generation of HD games didn’t begin until they introduced at that mode and yet here we are with all of their biggest and best titles (except GT:HD I think) being 720p … just like MS which has been bringing us the next generation of gaming for over a year now. And people want to keep debating me about how well the PS3 “is going to do in the future” … when according to them the future was when they released the PS3. And here we are … still waiting. So yes despite what these so called expert forecasters keep trying to ram down our throats it is the reality of Sony continually cutting their own throats so to speak that will really determine how far they have to go before they gain any meaningful traction. And not even 60 fps at 720p … no better than MS.
Despite this I will admit the game itself does look good and will probably help sell a few consoles (maybe … it is just a car game afterall and last time I checked those games are not the real reason gamers buy consoles for the most part). If only Sony wouldn’t make such grandiose statements all the time.

Wtf?why does sony always lie?Im getting tired of it,i really am!

Well, 1080p or 720p, it’s just about resolution, nothing else. My TV is 720p, so are 75% or all other HDTVs.
And MotorStorm is one of the best looking PS3 games I’ve seen, if not the best. I can’t wait to try it, 1080p or not.

Sony and their PS3 just can’t get out of their hole of bad press can they?

I played this at Wal-Mart and…. Im we kinda letdown. The game was overall slow. I mean I was SO looking out for this game but now im kinda ehh… The gameplay, videos and everything else Looks BADASS but when i played it, i wanted to drop the controller and cry in the corner. lets just hope that the real games is not like the Demo

Kudos to Alex.
Speaking of “only place you’ll get good PS3 news is on sony.com”, that reminds me of the Sony made fansite for the PSP.

i’ll agree the game previews looked good, but its pretty lame of them to talk up the 1080p issue and then not even release the games in it… lol, watch the only game they will release in 1080p will be Sonic, and if you’ve played it on 360 then you know what a gigantic piece of crap it is…

I have to agree with alot of views , Sony does need to get it together . I do think they need to stop lieing and get the job done. I do have to say when I played Motostorm at target I was blown away it was amazing at just 720p . So really thats why I cant wait untill they finally pay the devs right to make a 1080p game. Also the game looked 10 times better now then it did for the demo. So I’m really thinkin they may just stick to 720p for first gen and then switch for second gen tittles. I’m not blaming Sony on this one its the devs. I blame Sony for boasting and the devs for not bringin

Well you have to put some blame on Sony because since they know how complex the cell processor is it is their responsibilty to work with the developers to get a better grasp of how to program for it and also to provide better development tools ensuring that THE SONY STATED goals of 60fps and 1080p are met. If they can’t do that then they need to start spouting off so much and keep their engineers working on ways to make their development partners looks as technically savy as possible. The truth is the developers can only do so much with the tools they are given. And just about everyone has said that MS has done a better job working with devs on getting the most out the 360 than Sony has with the Cell. That is just a fact. But as I say this is an area Sony has to address quickly if they are going to gain any momentum at all.

“need to stop spouting off …” is what I meant to say.

haha evander is my wife
and found her way on this kick ass site too! anyways im tired of sony, i really am i love how the fans support it tho.But the gays ones that bash everything aree queers. Personally im not a console fan but i have to pick one its the 360. I mean for 600 bucks either way u have the game machine/dvd/mps/ipod thing/the new tv thing/hd movies/and downloadable hd movies..the big flaw are i cant play on a gamepad.
I love my racing and sports games but i know how to download games so meh y pay for something i can download and try it. Another, sony is full of bs and i wont ever buy a product from them ever again besides a movie cuz im forced to that crap.Other than that, the batteries going on fire on laptops, the ps3 promised 400k only 180k showed, the games not being 1080p but 720p.Atleast MS takes their old games and makes them 720p hd where he ps3 plays horrible graphcis for the ps1,and ps2 ppl say its horrible.
I heard even the dvd and blu ray sucks major balls on the ps3 compared to the 360..if i were u and were thinking on what console to roll with get a 360 or a wii or both for the same price as a ps3.U have a next gen graphic and next gen gameplay for the same price.

yeah I agree Anuban thats a nice point they really do need to team up with the devs instead just saying here make it happen and leave lol thats not cool . I think they need to go back to there roots like when they launch the Ps1. They had the best plot back then with asking fans and devs what they want . Also letting everyone play it ,marketing it well the whole nine. Thats the only way I see them building any steam. We all know when you finally get on top you start to get lazy. so its time to get off your ass and make a push. I have to give credit Microsoft did there homework well this time around

Like Alex said, it’s just a resolution issue. Even if MotorStorm runs at 720p, it looks better than any other Xbox 360 racing game, and other racing game in general, actually.
But yea, sad for Sony with so many broken prmises.

well said, Monarky!
But the Lord of gaming does play favorites. That’s why Sony was and will continue to be considered the #1 console brand by the masses. heh, heh..

“All hail Monarky!”

Big deal. Does it really matter? Most to the HDTVs, even many of the newer models, are native at only 1366×768 even though the TV maker says “HDTV supporting 1080i/1080p” and neglect to mention that the set downscales that nice 1080 signal to something closer to 720 anyway. I don’t see how a 1080i/p game will look much if any better than one at 720p if the TV is downscaling it anyway.
I own my PS3 and enjoy it just fine on my SD Sony Trinitron TV (which looks DANG good for an SDTV), but I guess I enjoy gameplay and getting immersed in games. I plan on taking the system to a friend’s HD set in the next couple weeks to see the Motor Storm demo, Ridge Racer 7 and GTHD on it. And, I plan on upgrading to an HD set in the fall of `07 as more Bluray movies are availible.
