Gears of War Sells 3 Million

January 14th, 2007 Posted in Business

gears3million.jpgIn totally unsurprising news, Xbox Live’s Major Nelson writes that Gears of War has sold 3 million copies. Quoting NPD data for December 2006, he stated that Xbox 360 outsold the PS3 and Wii combined last month; he also notes that Microsoft’s console has grabbed 51% market share in the United States. There were some interesting tidbits about Xbox Live as well: 5 million active members, three billion hours of gameplay (!) and two million messages sent each day. Don’t you love when companies throw stats around?

Not surprising at all, but 3 million in what, 2 months? I honestly don’t think Halo 3 will beat that. Only Gears of War 2. Maybe.

Halo 3 will beat that I am certain. Probably sell 4-5 million copies in the same time frame. If it doesn’t I would be very surprised considering the history behind Halo and all the hype that is being generated by MS/Bungie. I also think that you are correct in thinking that Gears 2 will do equally well … if not a bit better. I just hope that I like Gears 2 more from a personal standpoint.
