Xbox 360 HD-DVD Add-on Sells 100,000
January 15th, 2007 by Darren Stevens in Articles, Business, Gear, Hardware, Technology, Xbox360
Microsoft’s HD-DVD add-on for the Xbox 360 has sold over 100,000 units in North America, according to numbers from the NPD Group. It sold 42,000 units in November when it launched, and an additional 50,000 units in December. It surpassed the 100k mark early in January. In comparison, the Xbox 360 console sold 4,5 million units during the same period, meaning that only a tiny percentage of Xbox 360 owners were interested in a HD-DVD drive. Compared to the overall sales of the 360, less than 1% own the HD-DVD add-on.
Various tests are indicating that the Xbox 360 + HD-DVD do a better job than PlayStation 3’s Blu-ray player, but sales certainly show that Xbox 360 owners aren’t interested in the add-on, much the same way PS3 owners aren’t particularly interested in the Blu-ray playback capability.

They’d have sold a damn sight more of them too if you could actually find one for sale.

Naw, I think people still want to wait and see which format is backed up more by the movie industry.
So far Blu-ray has Disney and Fox which are two big companies, so it could be a tough and long fight until a format is decided.

Blu ray wins man, accept it.
and FYI: XBOX360 USES STANDARD DVDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, the format war is really raging now, isn’t it?

We never asked for a better DVD, it was forced on us.
Here’s a hot tip for those big-shot corporations: Sell us something we want instead of something you think we should have. Who knows, it might sell a little better.

I love my HD-DVD player and it is easy to see the difference in quality (up to 6x the resolution on a 1080p set; on my 720p/1080i set it is about 4 times the resolution which is noticeable) and once you go HD it is hard to go back. I think for me the big issue atm is the lack of titles available and how long it takes titles to go to HD-DVD (and even blu-ray for that matter). But I am glad I got the HD-DVD player when I did even if I am unable to do a hookup through HDMI to get the best sound possible since I have an optical connection for sound and a 5.1 system the sound is still amazing and still better than a standard DVD.
But I for one am glad that this was an add-on only (and only $200 at that) and not built in to the 360 which would have raised the price of the unit at launch and may have greatly affected sales (we will likely never know). I like the fact that it is a matter of choice (and so do more than 98% of 360 owners apparently) and I still think Sony should have looked at from the consumers standpoint and just given people a choice to spend $400 on a full blown DVD only game console or if they wanted the Blu-ray enhanced system. I am certain they would have sold twice as many units plus had more available at launch had they adopted that strategy.

I’ve seen stuff in HD compared to regular resolution, it’s looks great indeed, it’s just not worth the price at the moment, not even if it’s $200. When you start getting huge libraries of true HD movies (not just scaled up), and players with a $100-$150 price tag, then I’ll go for it. Not before.

It’s still the future, whether you go into it now in or a year or two. Same thing with the DVD vs. VHS.
