Lost Planet Sells One Million
January 16th, 2007 by Matt Stone in Business
Despite receiving rather modest reviews, Capcom’s Lost Planet has sold 1 million copies worldwide. The game was released late last year in Europe, and only a few days ago in North America. Capcom was hoping to sell 740,000 copies for them to consider the game a success. The key reason was undoubtedly the hype the publisher managed to create, from the successful demos to the launch event itself, all executed perfectly in order to get attention to the game. Same thing happened when Dead Rising was released. Perhaps Sony should try and steal a few PR employees from Capcom?

Seems to me evey publisher should do waht Capcom does, hype the s**t out of everything, even if it isn’t that good to begin with. Lost Planet has worse score on GameRankings than Dead Rising, yet it has already sold a million. Damn, that’s good marketing.

I didn’t even know it was released already in Europe … and that is pretty impressive for it to have already sold a million copies … however from the article I read about the Launch Party it seemed the people at that event didn’t have many complaints. In any event I just rented it and will see if I like it enough to actually buy it.

I honestly believe we will see more and more demos of games just like Lost Planet. Release a single player demo just to give xbox 360 owners a chance to play the game and see what it looks like. Then, a few weeks before release, put out a multiplayer demo for gamers to play. I know a lot of people on my friends list who weren’t going to get this game, but then downloaded the multiplayer demo and pre-ordered the game.

Noitce the word used here is “sold” not “shipped” … there is a big difference between the two. I wonder which is actually more accurate in this instance. I know that TeamXbox is reporting the news like this: “Lost Planet and Dead Rising Ship Over Two Million Units”. But then again 360Monster did say that “Dead Rising has now officially infested one million homes all over the place” … so I tend to believe that in this case Capcom has sold is the case and not just shipped.
