Sony: 2 Million PS3s Shipped
January 16th, 2007 by Tobias Dahl in Business, Online, PlayStation 3
Sony Japan has announced that 2 million PlayStation 3 units have been shipped worldwide, 1 million of them in Japan. They still plan on meeting the goal of 6 million units shipped worldwide by March 2007. On the software side, Sony revealed that 5 million PS3 games were sold by the end of 2006. However, only 25% of PS3 owners have registered with the free online service, compared to over 50% of Xbox 360 users.
They also revealed that Gran Turismo HD was downloaded 300,000 times in Japan since its launch, a mere 20 days ago.

out of 3 millino Gears of War games sold, 2 million are played online. MS said that at elast 5 million Xbox Live users are playing online. They expect that number to hit 6 million this summer.

they can dish out many consoles, so maybe a price decrease?

These numbers sound inaccurate. Despite the string of horrible marketing decisions lately, I wonder if Sony would gow as low as to report false numbers to the public…. Then again it wouldn’t be the stupidest thing they’ve done.

Sony always use shipped figures which I always think is a little misleading as it gives no indication of popularity unless an item is totally sold out. Would be interested to see the sell through.
Xbox live is a bit of a con imo paying for downloads you’d get free with pc is a jole but paying extra to play online when even handhelds provide it free Is ripping it a bit imo. I’d like to see wii and ps3 free gaming services damage live a bit so microsoft at least makes the gaming bit free

Well seeing as that would be in vialation of the fair trade commission I highly doubt it. No company would report false numbers that could influence the purchase or sale of their stock. Not only is it unethical, but it’s highly illegal as well.
One only needs to look at the incredibly stupid mistakes Microsoft has been making to realise, they make a lot more bad decisions than Sony. Especially when you consider the Looney Zune death march onto the market and the extremely often delayed Vista. Taking almost all technology advancements out and using extremely overactive user permissions control. Among a myriad of others. The only true inovative product they have is Live. But look at that now?
Where is Live Anywhere Technology today? Nobody knows, probably lost in the dark like so many of M$’s middle management morons! Now even WinFS is dead! Stupid, cheap decisions then top it off with a fake speed boost using hybrid hard drives that only accelerate booting. With full RamSan and Solid State drives just around the corner, that will accelerate everything in the newest Linux kernels! Solid State drives are super fast and can be used just like portions of the drive are like hardware memory. Linux is built on modular technology in microkernels running various servers so if one goes down you just restart that one. You aren’t forced to reboot the whole system. Change one kernel to harness all this power!
Microsoft runs as a Macro kernel and they would have to rewrite the whole kernel, which is what they should have done in the first place. NT kernel is now a monster and still houses large junks of legacy code slowing the entire system down.

LOL, yeah, only Microsoft could make Sony look good. What I meant was more along the line of what ruined said, using some trick to tell the truth but still exaggerate it.

I think Sony’s image has already been tarnished by past events, like their batteries and the anti-pirating software on CD’s that open computers to hackers… They don’t need people on their ass about something as silly as not reporting numbers the way they should be reported, which explains why they do it the way it should be done by all companies.

I dont understand how “SHIPPED” can be misinterpreted to “SOLD”.
January 18th, 2007 at 2:54 am
It cannot be … unless people are letting their judgement be clouded. Even Capcom is making the same mistake with their “shipments” of Lost Planet and Dead Rising. Here is a good quote taken from someone (who says anyway) that was a Marketing Mananger in the gaming industry:
“Having been a marketing manager in the gaming industry for 4 years, I can assure you there is a huge difference between units shipped and units sold. Units shipped strictly implies the number of copies you have sent out into the distribution chain (distributors and retailers combined). Units sold indicates the number of copies actually in the hands of consumers.
For some publishers, they really don’t care to discern the difference, because once they receive their money from the distribution chain, it’s considered sold. It’s then up to distributors and retailers to turn those units into “sold throughs”.
Many companies are quick to publish the shipping numbers to help a game’s success… but all it really means is that the distributors and retailers have “ordered large”, because they perceive that the title will have brisk sales over time. Either way though, all those copies aren’t in gamers’ hands just yet.”
But someone did point out that at least for Dead Rising many sites are using the word sold and even on Digital Battle you will find that they say that Lost Planet has sold over a million copies not just shipped. But I have yet to see the word “sold” in front of any PS3 numbers. Maybe someone can show me something that says differently though.

I’m not even close to being a fanboy, so don’t dare call me that. I don’t favor any console. The PS3 isn’t doing well at all right now and unless it picks up Sony is going to have a lot of trouble. Its a plain and simple fact that you’re going to have to face. If it costs them over $800 to make they have $200 they have to sell in games and accessories to make up for it.
They’ve shipped 2 million. 2 mill x $800 = $1,600,000,000 they would have spent making them. NPD says 687,000 have sold, and lets assume they are all $600 PS3’s because we can’t live without Wi-fi.
687,000 x $600 = $412,200,000.
1,600,000,000 - 412,200,000 = $1,187,800,000
$1.1 billion dollars left to make up for all those PS3’s that have sold since NPD reported those numbers. And I didn’t even use precise numbers. So give me a break and give yourself a break. Unless PS3 starts majorly selling some massive numbers in games and accessories its going to be hard to keep watching Sony with a positive point of view.

All this argument over Sony releasing surprising numbers? grow up, all of you.
January 19th, 2007 at 2:59 am
Damn, you got me, I assume I am no game developper, I admit, I’m Ken Kutaragi, here trying to put the things as they are because the fanaticals that worship our brand, are puting us to a shame by trolling & insulting everybody, even the clever Nintendo fans that got it right from the beginning, that’ why we are always copying them of course. Unfortunatly, our fanboys are a shame & can’t bare the simpliest truth even when me, the living God Ken Kutaragi tells them… I wish I still worked for Nintendo, that were good times…
January 19th, 2007 at 3:10 am
… on another hand, whatever… you are so sure of half distorded truth from the beginning, teasing me like that about my profession won’t get you anywhere ;)!!! If you were a little smarter you would have concluded last century that I don’t fall for troll provocation, you are a little raging kid trolling… keep writting too, as I said before, your trolling fanboys entertains me, I’ll feed you as long as you have legs to run hehehe…
January 19th, 2007 at 10:24 am
LOL you’ve just confirmed my worst fear! Did any of the other inmates escape from the mental ward of that prison you were in? Hope not, two or more of YOU loose could create real havok going around thinking they are even close to Ken Kutaragi’s level of intelligence.
You peeps are all just jealous cuz everything he said was Oh So True! And the fact that little donation of a chip to Nintendo while he was still working at Sony means he worked there is assinine. But keep believing your on the same level as Ken and you’ll get tossed back in the crazy can with your other lowlife nutzoid buddies!
Developer????

GameGod:
“Do you have a parental authorization for the preceding diatribe against my posterior??? If the response to the preceding one is affirmative, I await you on my linguistic field, to see whether you are also virtuosos in stupid things that in your mother tongue… Just while passing, your lack of arguments as well as the weak formulation of your reasoning, all the more cheap as is mixed of a feeling reluctant lack of the basic education… insult as good seems to you my nice, the history of the white dove and of the clamping plate does not age…”
I speak French and Japanese (although my Japanese is pretty rusty)

I was saying… great, but a babelfish translation can’t quite capture the prose or somtimes the meening of what I’ve written… the clamping plate?!?!?!? Nice try nevertheless, but computer generated translation is easilly recognisable…

” All this argument over Sony releasing surprising numbers? grow up, all of you. ”
this comment is out of place. this isn’t about fanboyism. this is about condemning an ongoing practice that has plagued the business world almost forever: the misrepresentation of a business entity’s performance by half-wit analysts!
January 20th, 2007 at 5:35 pm
“What has the I speak french or japanese (which is always nerdy, since only nerds think it’s cool to speak a language -nobody uses or can’t be used on no one-”
That right there is clearly an ignorant statement. How is Japanese or French not used? If a person knows more than two lanuages fluently you can assume that person is ingelligent. If you spoke Latin fluently I wouldn’t call that stupid because nobody speaks it, I would still think the person smart because they actually learned it.
In my post earlier I clearly stated
I didn’t even use precise numbers
I just used ones that the majority of people have heard, not wasting my time pulling numbers off the net.
Besides, you missed the point. It wasn’t about the selling numbers, it was about how much money Sony is losing.
January 20th, 2007 at 9:31 pm
Indeed I suck & very hard but not always, sometimes I suck gently too, what I suck now is I’m afraid dear chump, none of your kwonledge… Actually I’m quite fluent speaking 4 languages, 2 of them flawlessly… I rather enjoy being able to speak many languages & I’m sad not knowing even more… could go for quite a long time telling the benefits of being a able to do so, but I assume from your previous comments where wit was nowhere to be seen, that I would be losing my time… ;P

GameGod er… is that LameGod or best yet FlameGod!!! That’s it you are the God of Flame which is very Lame for a name. But then again maybe this Flamer is not not really a Gamer, but more of a Lamer. And obviously a Gay Flamer at that.
Gay Blade goes with X360 interface that looks oh so Lame and is an easily Flamed Name! Like the GameGod that’s a Lame Flaming Gamer!

” Indeed I suck & very hard but not always, sometimes I suck gently too..”
you definately could have kept that one to yourself dude.

hey it seems people feel that sony only owns ps3. let not forget that ps2 is still selling better than xbox360 and not bad next to wii figure and despite psp not selling as much as ds it is still selling a lots by any standard. plus they have the bravia tv, viao, cybershot camera, movie studio(spiderman/james bond tec…)music and a whole lot more. i think stringer is doing a good job and sony will never report fake numbers cuz that illigal. by the way most company report shipped numbers not numbers sold. i think that sony are slowly but surely trying to readress the ps3 issues. true it is still expensive and lack killer app but soon we will have mgs, liar, killzone, unreal tournamant, ratchet and clank just 2 name a few. i think the price will drop by about 100 to 150 before christmas cuz they will wants to built up hype. wii is good no doubt but as we all know mainstream/casual gamers are fickle and down the road that might be a problem. also ninetendo need to have a large library of games cuz software will be the most important factor in the so call console war. sony has done a good job of buying studio or producing thier own games which will help in the future. as for 360 i think it is very limited and now it is begginning to get the bad press that sony was getting and that will affect it very much. plus the ceo has just left to go work with ea. in the long run ps3 will win cuz it got the staying power but wii will be the best seller in the next 1 to 3 years period from now. 360 will probably be scrapped just like the first xbox
