Capcom’s highly anticipated shooter brought some great visuals and solid gameplay, but lack of a decent story and some design issues, to say the least, prevented it from being the first must-have game of 2007.
GameSpot (81/100) “Lost Planet is a great action game because it focuses on tense, thrilling battles that don’t require much input beyond a constant trigger finger and healthy desire to kill everything that moves. There’s very little downtime in the single-player game, and there’s always plenty of stuff to shoot. That makes it easily entertaining if you’re just in the mood to kick back and put your brain on standby for awhile.”
IGN (85/100) “Lost Planet is a great game that suffers from a few bad design decisions. The graphics are excellent by any standard with only v-synching issues preventing them from looking truly amazing. The enemy design and amount of action they deliver makes for great gameplay that is hampered by control mechanics that get in the way of the experience. Add in a stumbling story and you have a game that doesn’t quite reach the levels of some of the more outstanding titles we’ve seen in recent months.”
GameSpy (80/100) “There are some stumbles here, no question, but Lost Planet is a unique vision, a mix of NES gameplay and cutting edge graphics, with some great multiplayer to boot. Pick it up to see what happens when one of the industry’s biggest companies actually takes one of those “risks” we keep asking for.”
Eurogamer (70/100) “Lost Planet: Extreme Condition feels like it had the potential to be a pared-down shooter classic, but never quite manages to make the core combat exciting, varied or challenging enough to elevate it to the lofty realms that early showings suggested it would reach.”

1Those reviews are pretty much spot on I would have to say. After playing through the first couple of chapters I already noticed that some of the design choices were wacky to say the least. In the Shooter genre not being able to turn quickly is not a good choice to make and not being able to shoot straight up just plain sucks. I also don’t like having to always worry about collecting thermnal energy to stay alive but at least so far that has not been an issue. Graphically the game is damn nice but I guess it was more impressive when I saw it last year before R6V or Gears of War. Still the graphics are nice for the most part. I am renting this now but chances are I will end up buying it … but I’m going to wait for a used copy.

2Erm, the top 2 front buttons (above fire) will turn you instantly 90 degrees, also the speed of the normal turning can be adjusted in options…

3lol, the idiot in IGN complained about the ‘vsyncing issues’… all the games characters have pre-programmed motion blurring… like m$ says, its not a bug, its a feature.

4I don’t like the 90 degrees turn mechanism (to me it is disorienting) and I did not know that the speed of the normal turning was adjustable so thanks for that bit of information. However, that doesn’t change how I feel about the game … there are other things I don’t like but as I said I will probably buy it at some point.

5I have to say that I like this game, I don’t think it is a KILLER app but I do like it. It is far too easy though, and I cant help but see a trend in games now-a-day’s. The trend is to make games that would be a great online romp but pass off the single player that is just so-so. I for one will not play-to-play, and have no interest in playing online with zit faced snot nosed brats that swear too much and love the word “FAGGOT.” I played “Gears” and thought it was okay… the graphics were good but Gears was made to be an online game I feel. I also see that with Lost Planet. The single player mode is FAR too easy in nearly every way but I do enjoy going at the missions in different fashions. It is just a shame that the polish and scope seems to be shrinking. Just my two cents-

6Time for me to laugh. When the first video footage was released and also discussed on DB I said that it didn’t look all that unique and rather dated gameplay. I got burned, o”oh ps fanboy this, ps fanboy that” blablablla
Guess I .. got.. a … professional view BHAA
